I have seen a lot of things about Access, MySQL, and SQL.

These things all come at a price. I know the search, and tie-in coding, behind using say an SQL database, but how would I create a database to test my knowledge on (you never know how to really do something until you actually do it)?

Is there anyway to make a database from scratch, without needing to by expensive software? If there is I would like to know, a tutorial that caters to this would be even better.

I am looking to get in on the entire database thing, because I see that they tend to be very improtant.

Actually if you want to get started MySQL is free for Unix or Linux and you can get older Win32 versions for free as well. Access is usually included in the Microsoft Office Pro suites if you have access to that software.

I would recommend (if you are not already) getting a version of Linux on your system if you have the resources, in this biz it is invaluable to be able to move around on that platform. It can be a pain to install and you better be ready to spend a lot of time getting it going the first time but there are TONS of resources to help.
