hi there folks--

i just finished messing around on my first project for my digital media class. the assignment was simply to integrate two images into one, most people are just now learning photoshop there...

this is something i worked on for a little bit of time, it's exploring a style i've been examining within myself lately. it seems pretty simple, but i didn't want to overwork it.

if you're brave enough (the image is 382,001 bytes... sorry), you can find it at... www.zerominuszero.net/digital/project5b.jpg ...woohoo!

i'd like some comments if you folks don't mind. thanks a lot.

I think it's an interesting peice, I like the two sets of images. I think personally it would be more attractive if there were just a little more definition (not too much more...) in the larger portion, and maybe somewhat wider spacing between the smaller images.

It looks dead-set magazine style to my eyes.

You know like on a articles start page they might layer a few quotes from the next pages over some art. That look.

I'm not a huge fan of the style itself, but
the results are really good.

That's kind of what I was thinking -- like it's a backdrop for a title or something. I like it. The only thing that bothers me is that there's no subject. I was thinking maybe you could bring down a larger version of one of those squares into the lower portion, overlapping the row of images at the top a little to provide a focus for the layout.

Good work, you'll probably kick the other guys' butts.

That glowing green is one of my favorite looks, the large image is really well done but the chess thing ain't goin over real well for me. You could stand more space in between them yes, just mix the composition up to provide a better focal point somehow, in your own way. Drop the chess altogether and you've got Metallica's next album cover (is that a good thing?)

In the end that piece is artwork and is too daggum subjective to say much about, it's your baby. You're right don't *over*work it but work it some mo unless you are satisfied.

Just personal interest here milkey, did you take the main photo yourself?

alright, first off i'd like to say thanks for all the feedback you guys have given me.. a few people also sent me messages via icq, so i've had a lot to think about.

to this point, the only thing i've changed with the image is the border around the chess pieces. the black borders just blend in with the background too much, so i tried a grayish color and it really lends to the look. separates it nicely from the background and all...

i also experimented with trying a more organic/darker green, but i'm rather fond of the neon green so it shall stay. played around with the placement of the chess pieces, like moving them down further and shifting their alignment. onec again though, i found the current position to be the most visually pleasing.. though i just came up with an idea i'm going to try as soon as i finish this post.

i should probably add that the image looks a lot better in the format i'm working with, 10"x8" @ 150dpi.. the quality and texturing really make me smile, i just hope i can pull it off with the printer.

so maybe i should offer my insight and meaning to the picture, since it'll be expected for me to give some explanation to my class. first off, in all of my images i've made in the past 5 years, i stick to photographs i've taken for the majority--in fact, i can only think of 1 graphic i've made in the past year that involved something that i didn't take.

oh, so first off.. the photographs all hold special meaning to me. but if you want my interpretation for a meaning, i was trying to show that all structures eventually fall apart and crumble given time. the chess pieces are figments of an imagined world where everything is planned out and perfected... yet give it enough time, and it'll eventually burn to the ground. the candles are in a state of decay, leaving behind a failed facade and turning into a nightmare almost.

somewhat convoluted? yes.. but that's the way i work with my art. it's also the way i feel my own world is around me, so why not show what i'm feeling..

back to the technical stuff, i have been exploring a layout and design style that's very close to print graphics lately. yes, i want it to look like something out of a magazine almost.. after working on elaborate collages for most of my photoshop experience, i want to explore another realm now.

the small spacing between the chess pieces is definitely how i want it, any more space makes it lose presence i feel it strongly commands. like i said earlier, a greyish border around the images has really solidified that area.

i was also perhaps going to intertwine a quote relating to my feelings about the piece, but i feel that's just giving it to the viewer too easily.. i like people to arrive at their own conclusions.

sorry if this was longwinded, but it's not often i get to do art for myself.. instead of work for clients and friends.

Dag boy, that's pretty good photography. I figgered after reading some of your posts and casual mentions of drug use that you had taken the photo yourself. Candles melting on liquor bottles gave it away. When I was in school a friend had a room where we would hang when we were altered and we had tons of candles and crayons and a Coleman torch to melt em with and when you got bored of melting stuff we would paint on the walls or examine wadded up aluminum foil balls under a red light/black light.

Strongest anti-drug testimony I've ever written right there. heheh

aaaaaaaa ahahahaha... shit man. drugs are bad, i don't do drugs.

i've got a bunch of really odd photographs in my collection, comparatively those bottles are pretty straight forward.

just another casual photographer with a slr in one hand and a bong in the other...

did i say bong? dang.

skaarjj -- this may seem a bit...profound, esoteric, astonishingly brilliant, but it says "DL-44"

Well...I hate to burst your bubble then, but if you think that those last two characters are numbers, they are not, they are the character 'e'. 44 would look like:

I like the addendum to your signature there DL. Milkey Miker oughta consider something like that.
Anyone know why people bother asking opinions on their graphics? I guess I would if something bothered me but if something bothers me I normally don't quit long enough to ask anybody anything. I'm obsessive maybe? And when I do let up it's because I'm satisfied, after I'm satisfied I don't bloody care what someone else thinks.
What was my point?
