hi kids...

we've talked earlier about how it upsets some people when a web site pops up a 2nd window that all information is displayed in.

my question is, is there a way to make the 1st window automatically close when the 2nd window loads? would this even help things, or just make it worse?

(i think it might make it worse because my pop-up window doesn't have a toolbar, menubar, locations.. and so on)

I do think you just answered your own question. How would you like to be able to surf without a toolbar and such?

Personally I have no problem with a second window popping up, because usually the second window will give the user a bigger viewing space.

In my opinion I would keep the parent window open, that way you can target links to pages outside of your server to the parent window. As for closing the parent i've read parts of a book on javascript. I'm not a pro, but try using the self.close variable along with the variable that opens a new window.

I'm just going to stop there, because I could be doing more bad then good!

As far as I know, unless you open a window, you cannot close it. If you put window.close in the code, a dialog box will come up stating that the page is trying to close the current window and asks the user whether he/she would like to close the window or not.

i have problems with sites like these. i have no toolbars, very poor navigation (once you get inside the site), and no status bars. i never know if the link is going to pop up in a mini window, a full blown link, or another link within the site.

i mean.. its pretty and all... and i certainly dont remember the music being there when i last visited the site...

There are several pretty good security reasons why you can't close the window you didn't open. In most browsers (!) each open window has it's own history file associated with it, if you close the opening window, MY window, I may get to see your site, but will lose the address of the site I came from and I would be VERY pissed off at you. There are tricks you can do to delete the history file on a browser, but that was fixed on later browsers for this very good reason.

Persoanlly, I hate launched windows. Seems like most of them could have been handled just as well with frames if you wanted to lock this perfectly odd shape down. If you must open a window, check the viewers screen resolution, many of these things open up windows bigger than my screen! Annoying. Check the code embedded in the www.handson.nu page, it's activated when you follow the 'glass' link. This checks the inner window size, and if too small, makes it a tad wider. (Since the glass page is all DHTML, and needs a certain width, and a certain 20% of all browsers gets confused when you resize, I do it for you!) Nearly as annoying, but not as bad, IMHO.

Well, like most people I just find the launched windows a nausciance(sp?) Like the good Doc said it makes bookmarking a bitch and also you do not have the tool bar and status window. Sure it does give you more room to work with, hitting F11 in IE(not sure about NN) gives you just about the same features. Is there a way using dHTML to automatically make a browser window maximize when opened? That could be pretty cool and would give you all of your menu bars.

I hate launched windows personally. Just a nuisance as far as I'm concerned. for a special section of the site, for demonstration purposes, or image viewing....fine. But for the main content of the site...just ugly and self-involved I'd say <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/biggrin.gif">

I'd be even more pissed if a page maximized my browser though! If I wanted it maximized I'd maximize it.....I HATE a maximized browser window. If a site did that, I would leave and never return! Just like I do for sites that require me to have my window maximed (the Horizontal Scrollbar of Death).

By the way -- I like the new sig Doc, nice colors <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/biggrin.gif">

I HATE sites like http://www.3dcafe.com that open EVERY link in a new window.

It is so annoying always having to right-click, copy link location, location bar, paste, go to link.

I know some Javascript - I can cut and paste with the best of them. However, do you think it is possible to set the current window to display less toolbars? For example, you come to my web site and I write an onLoad function() that changes the display of the current browser window... eliminating the address bar, the buttons, etc.
NOTE: you could easily create a button to restore toolbars, etc (much like the F11 key in I.E.) with javascript if you can dynamically modify the displayed elements with a function.

Why not give the viewer the choice? make a set of radio buttons / check boxes / diff. links to diff. versions on the first page so the user can decide for him/herself?

That way nobody gets what he/she didn't ask for. Maybe you can insert a counter which version(s) is/are used most.

Or make a button (show/hide toolbar}. or is that impossible?
