Something is wrong in the Land of Ozone. This is in response to AbSoLuTe's question about distorting/dispacing.

Start with this:
http://www.vgd.co.uk/pages/notebook/Raytracing%20in%20Photoshop/RayPS.html

I know it's a bit much, so we are going to hack the 3D thing with lighting effects.

Start up a new doc (preferably using the same dimensions as the picture you want to distort) in RGB with a grey background. Do your basic shape in an alpha channel. Copy it. Now shade it your favorite way, such as Doc's multi-tiered gauss technique.

Now to the layer palette. New layer, load basic shape, fill with grey.

Now it's time for lighting effects. Use your shaded shape and use 2 lights coming in from opposite directions, one pure red and the other pure green -- I've also gotten some good results using 4 lights from four corners. When you are done with that, you should have a grey background with your shape in tones of red and green. Save it for use as your displacement map.

Load up the picture you want to distort and distort away using your new and improved displacement map.

Make sense?

I've never checked any of the links until now. Damn near all of them. However, the Synthetic Lighting works and is an interesting read.

That's like... neat and stuff. Anyways, it's time for me to digress.
