Someone has taken the liberty of signing me up for a password or something at pink4free.com. Hazards of posting to a bulletin board I guess. I've always been really paranoid about posting and giving out any email addresses and it sucks missing out on the exchanges because of this paranoia. I love Photoshop and almost everything about this group here in the Asylum but c'mon guys. I don't need that kind of trash in my inbox, it's hard enough to resist when all you have to do is type in a naughty word in Yahoo and you get the myriad to choose from.

This is a pretty mature bunch here most days. I'd appreciate it if you'd not do that again please whoever you are. - Before anyone asks: there are several clues that make me 90% sure that the offender is from this forum. I hope I'm not asking for worse with this post and I'm hoping this kind of thing is discouraged around here, in fact I know it is, here and almost everywhere. Thanks.

Hmm? I'd be surprised if it was a malicious attempt to annoy you from someone in this forum. There *is* the possibility that some nasty bot has come surfing through here looking for mail adys and such, I don't mask that information currently. If this turns into a problem forum-wide, I guess I will start masking emails, but I'd much prefer not to. (You have to be a member to view emails. I'll look through ther member logs and see if any bot-like entities have signed up recently.) If anyone else finds themselves getting spam like this, let me know.

FWIW: I get about 30-40 spams a day, my email address is well known. (This is after going through a round of spam-killer agents on the server end!) My local mail software is rather well trained though, and files all of the new potential spams in a holding pen - then I create rules to simply delete them on the server without downloading. Some of the mails I want get in there too, then I let my software know to let those ones through. How do you want to live? You can live in a box, wrapping yourself with several layers of paranoia, or you can simply create agents to handle the annoying intrusions of the outside world. I live publically and deal with the consequences. YMMV!

I signed up for a geocities address for this very reason.
I sure as hell don't want that sort of spam getting to my primary POP.

And this one doesn't use cookies or javascripts to ID you. http://192.108.102.201:82/129.htm

Yup, I've got a wicked list of rules going myself, just don't wanna add another. I was really sad the day I had to make an Aunt FWD:FWD:FWD file and rule for all those annoying relatives who think it's their responsibility to forward you every chain mail/cute story they get.

Just out of curiosity...

All Netscape users here, know about making their cookies.txt file "Read Only", right?

(Edited):
In windows explorer, locate your cookies.txt file in the users\user_name\ folder.

Open the file in notepad and delete all entries *BENEATH* the statement...."This is a generated file! Do not edit"....

Once that is done, save and then close the file.
While still in explorer, right-click the same file, slide down to "Properties" and place a checkmark in the box labeled..."Read-only".

Click "Apply" then "Ok".

The point of this is that private data can be kept in that file, data that some unscrupulous site owners might want to sell to ad companies or worse.

This little trick prevents servers from writing to that cookie file, yet the browser's own temporary cookie will retain password info only until you shut down the browser, then it's wiped from memory.

If servers can't write to that file, then there won't be anything to read from it....

Cheers,

C.C.

Well, Cold_Canuck, are you aware that sites can only read cookies that they made themselves? If microsoft.com puts a cookie on your computer, then altavista.com can't read that cookie. So if you give one site some personal data, the only way another place can get that data is if the first site sells it to them. So that little trick won't help avoid things like this.

Personally, I let all sites edit my cookies. If I don't want a site to know something, then i don't tell them it. For instance, amazon.com knows a lot about me, but as long as they don't sell the info somewhere else, all they can use that info for is to better target me with their products.

JK: Im just curious as to what exactly the clues that lead you to believe that someone from here would do that. Personally most of us just dont have the time to do something stupid like that. Although I do send a lot of different catalogs to my best friend Justin's house <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/biggrin.gif"> His moms a big Yankees fan and well Im a Mets fan so I send them with the name "Yankees SUCK" and it actually sends <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

Time Jestah? It would take less than a minute. No, I'm sure I'm not being 'targeted' or anything silly like dat. I'm sure it was just done on a whim and there was no consideration behind it at all. Nothing malicious, just annoying.<edit> Like that Yankees SUCK thing! That's funny but I would be steamed if a friend of mine got all my personal information plugged in to another junk mail list. I'm just tired of junk mail, junk email, window and siding and insurance and policeman's ball, muscular distrophy ticket salespeople calling me at home when I'm trying to work, sleep, eat, enjoy the company of my family and/or friends... I *really* like my private time, no I *value* it. It just seems privacy is a thing of the past and I'm going to have to live with it eh? Pisser.</edit>

Alright JK, stop whining I didnt sign you up for anything. I dont see what the big deal is anyway, your not the only one on the internet getting spam. Also, it does take time, Id hafta look up your email address, find a website that sends junk mail and then actually fill in the information requested. I value my time too, thats why I wouldnt waste it doing something like that. Im also sure that NO one in this forum would.

Didn't mean to be mean or offensive Im just in a bad mood, my cable modem stoped working today altogether, Im on a different modem now. I call up the company and they tell me they can fix it and they know why it isnt working but they cant tell me. I guess its a big secret or something. Ill get DSL next week I think, I cant stand this.

Ok alraedy i'll take you of my personall
best-friends-to-spam-list.
so here you go off you are. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif">

Well the one solution i had against spam was quite simple. Get some free email pop or webbased somewhere. use it for about two months move over to another and send all your pals the new email adres. It pretty well worked against spam. But after trying my fird hotmail acount they kicked me off.
Wonder why? :P

Anyone ever heard of real life spam. Like at mine house the localshops all put everyweek a folder through my mailbox (12 shops)just like the do-it-yourself bussinesses at my neighbourtowns (2 towns 24four of thes in each town). Some local journalists put a news paper in my my mailbox every two days.
This ads up to 1.5 kilogram each week !
And the worst thing is i have clean this mess out to see if the mailman did not by accident put a real letter in my mailbox.

An about spam all my email who comes from someone i did not gave my email adres too or who i don't know....bamm delete. 10 sec of work against 30 min each day for sorting the rubbish in my IRL mailbox.

Await the up coming Rinswind site

Just do what we did to stop Junk Mail. Our mailbox has a sign on it saying: 'We want no Junk Mail, Advertising, or offers to help little Suzie in Somalia live for three more seconds. You have been warned. Any perpatrators will be prosecuted.' And it then goes on to explain all the charges and stuff we could bring up on them, because since the mail box is on our property, if we tell them we don't want it and they put it there anyway, it's trespassing.

To fight the forces of spam I just use a few different email address. I have various AOL screen names which I never really use. Mostly my friends from school email me there. Friends Ive accumlated through webdesign and graphics email me at ieJestah@hotmail.com whenever I come to a website that asks for my email address and looks to be spam related I use notavailable2@hotmail.com. I also have numberous Yahoo and other free address too.

i figured i'd jump into the fray of spam...

(spam spam spam.. no silly, cut the monty python sketches)

anyways, i basically have 2 e-mail addresses. my hotmail address that i give to everyone and use on message boards, then there's my "real" e-mail address that i only give to people i like.

i get probably 60-80 pieces of spam to the hotmail account daily, but i check it at least twice a day so it isn't a big deal.

on the other hand, i get about 1 piece of spam to my 'real' account a week. i'm very picky about my real address though.. i think the only person from here that has it is doc, hell my parents don't even know it..

oh well, i just think spam is a necessary evil that takes about 5 seconds out of my life a day and i deal with it. boohoo, but there are bigger things to worry about.
