OK; so I went to the guestbook and read up on some posts there, I don't go there nearly often enough. I followed one url to this girls site in Austria, her site was still very new, she was obviously still learning, but I looked around anyway. Signed *her* guestbook, and then followed this link to her "chat" site. There's this applet, run by some gerrman company, for an IRC/undernet style chat applet, I did one of these once for theGamery.com, it was kind of cool. SO, I followed this link, grabbed the code and posted it here, at http://www.ozones.com/forum/chat.html - tell me what you think. It's got a banner glued into it, and the charset is somewhat fubarred for my swedish version macintosh keyboard, but I know where the keys are supposed to be in the US style layout.

SO! Do me a favour and check this out, would you? Seems to me it could be a handy tool for explaining stuff to somebody, when forum posts just won't cut it. Comments appreciated!

Hey Doc... I think it is a terrific idea.. had a look at the page and it looks good.. not sure if the applet was working though, (on the puter at work with firewalls etc.. so it might be there but I just can't load it).

It could make a very useful addition to the forum cos sometimes 'words' are not enough!

Yah, that was an issue with me too, I tried just using "doc" and it was a protected name, by somebody else on the system! Apparently the hole thing is run on one big shared server, so once we have our one and only "Steve" in one of the many chatrooms, that's that. I actually submitted a request to lock the name "DocOzone", heh heh. I'll keep a lookout for a solution I could run on my server, anyone know something I could use? Lemme know.

Is there any way you could change the images? It's not very ozone-ish. Could be fun, though. I love going into chats just to make sarcastic remarks!

I think it's a good idea. There is an identity problem there. I had a chat applet simmilar to this on my server, and people were logging on as other people (Since you could not reserver indetities on the free service i was on) and that was causing a big problem, so I had to shut it down. If you can coustomize your own applet and put it on your server, maybe it could be interconnected to the froum, so when to sing up with the forum you can use the same username, and password for the chatroom

I'm not to shure about this, but won't there be the possibility that if enough people log on the chat could bog down the server? That is if you put it on your server.

Interesting new feature. It didn't workout for me, though. I logged in using my name : Rick, but it didn't work. I guess someone else has taken that nick. Better use other nick and register it globally.

Other than that, do you have any channel to chat on the IRC, Doc? Just curious.

<edit>Hey Doc, I used to help run an IRC channel on NewNet and remember them having some kind of JavaChat on their site and I don't remember ads. I have no idea if they'll let you have one on your site but I would think they would, they were real helpful to the channel administrators when they moved to NewNet although we never set up javachat on the site. I always thought there oughta be an #ozonesasylum on irc.newnet</edit>Doh! URL's are always helpful: http://www.newnet.net/nnchat.html

Well there is maybe a solution for having a chat on this site chatspace It is a chat program wich runs upon your own server. In the free version you could have 1000 clients.

Ah! Chatspace looked pretty cool, up till the point that I found I can't run it on my UNIX server, gotta have an NT or 2000 "solution", blech. JKM, I've actually got a paid for java client for connecting to undernet or IRC, but other than being able to set it up I haven't a CLUE about how to do IRC. I know a few folks who are totally commited to it, switching modes left and right to protect their users from malicious bots, it was way too confusing. If you or someone you know could help me set up a channel and *keep* it, I could set up the java client easily. I'll take a look at newnet right now, though it seems I can see their webpages, just no chat.

Start an IRC chat room. I'll gladly help keep it alive.

Worth looking into Doc.

Hey Mikey "628 posts" Milker, I think you have a new addiction...

I went to the channel I used to op in on newnet and I couldn't get in, lag or something. I don't think it's as hard as you think Doc, I didn't set up the channel so I don't know much about it but I'll try and talk to the guy that did and see what he says.

Yup it's so easy to setup, even chat servers are simple. I got Conference Room server software up and running. And if I can do it...well.... And Yup they are mostly 10 year olds serving up warez n mp3s. But with a java client, alotta the chat traffic would come from here, mebbe more so than from ppl on the IRC servers using mIRC.

But IRC is hell fun. I could use a valid reason to get back amongst it.

Mikey and Wead are right, tons of immature kids that do some strange things that most people don't think of as funny, I think everyone around these parts can take care of themselves however. Definite possibilty of attracting a throng of fartknockers.

I am neither for nor against but would like to change this thread a bit and pose the question: "ozoneasylum chat: good or bad?" Just to see what everyone thinks.

It *is* addictive, be warned. You can waste a large pantload of time there... <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

JK : Do you know anything about Newnets new(ish) services? They we're just implementing them as I was dipping out of IRC into Q, so I never really got to play a great deal.

From the specs, I think it's now pretty hard for a 10 year old with too much time to come in and nuke a whole channel like they used to, Or steal ops and slap a ban on *.* heeh (fun n games)

Good channel services make it hard to nuke, and harder to take over someones channel. That and a 24/7 presence.

Oh and like every other idea ... I'm all for it! Good Good Good.

Ah well, its come up now, so it doesn't matter.

I'm no stranger to Multicity. How do I say this... I'll just state my own personal opinion. It would greatly sadden me to see it here.

May God forgive me for the prissy sincerity. I'm going to go gargle a handful of Brillo-pads and wash them down with Drano.
