OK; so I went to the guestbook and read up on some posts there, I don't go there nearly often enough. I followed one url to this girls site in Austria, her site was still very new, she was obviously still learning, but I looked around anyway. Signed *her* guestbook, and then followed this link to her "chat" site. There's this applet, run by some gerrman company, for an IRC/undernet style chat applet, I did one of these once for theGamery.com, it was kind of cool. SO, I followed this link, grabbed the code and posted it here, at http://www.ozones.com/forum/chat.html - tell me what you think. It's got a banner glued into it, and the charset is somewhat fubarred for my swedish version macintosh keyboard, but I know where the keys are supposed to be in the US style layout. |

Hey Doc... I think it is a terrific idea.. had a look at the page and it looks good.. not sure if the applet was working though, (on the puter at work with firewalls etc.. so it might be there but I just can't load it). |

Yah, that was an issue with me too, I tried just using "doc" and it was a protected name, by somebody else on the system! Apparently the hole thing is run on one big shared server, so once we have our one and only "Steve" in one of the many chatrooms, that's that. I actually submitted a request to lock the name "DocOzone", heh heh. I'll keep a lookout for a solution I could run on my server, anyone know something I could use? Lemme know. |

I think it's a good idea. There is an identity problem there. I had a chat applet simmilar to this on my server, and people were logging on as other people (Since you could not reserver indetities on the free service i was on) and that was causing a big problem, so I had to shut it down. If you can coustomize your own applet and put it on your server, maybe it could be interconnected to the froum, so when to sing up with the forum you can use the same username, and password for the chatroom |

Well there is maybe a solution for having a chat on this site chatspace It is a chat program wich runs upon your own server. In the free version you could have 1000 clients. |

Ah! Chatspace looked pretty cool, up till the point that I found I can't run it on my UNIX server, gotta have an NT or 2000 "solution", blech. JKM, I've actually got a paid for java client for connecting to undernet or IRC, but other than being able to set it up I haven't a CLUE about how to do IRC. I know a few folks who are totally commited to it, switching modes left and right to protect their users from malicious bots, it was way too confusing. If you or someone you know could help me set up a channel and *keep* it, I could set up the java client easily. I'll take a look at newnet right now, though it seems I can see their webpages, just no chat. |

oh boy, another channel/net to idle in =) i've been on irc for way too long, so i will gladly lend you any services in maintaining a channel.. maybe this will lure mikey back into the fold of IRC, but i doubt it. he's too busy playing baldur's gate II... |

Yup it's so easy to setup, even chat servers are simple. I got Conference Room server software up and running. And if I can do it...well.... And Yup they are mostly 10 year olds serving up warez n mp3s. But with a java client, alotta the chat traffic would come from here, mebbe more so than from ppl on the IRC servers using mIRC. |

I'm in favor of the chat room concept here. On the other hand, I worry that I'll miss some valuable pointers and advice if it's not posted in this forum. Would you believe that "Rancid" was already taken? (sigh) |

Goto tucows and there are lots of programs to find. I found Chatspace there. Doc do you have Linux or BSD unix on the server? for both there are some channels about IRC/Chat proggrams. |

Mikey and Wead are right, tons of immature kids that do some strange things that most people don't think of as funny, I think everyone around these parts can take care of themselves however. Definite possibilty of attracting a throng of fartknockers. |

I refuse to engage in an authentic arguement with a "colleague". (Did I spell anything right?) In my history as a member in this forum, you will not see one instance of malice (except toward Rancid). I'm no stranger to Multicity. How do I say this... I'll just state my own personal opinion. It would greatly sadden me to see it here. |

RANCID - I think if anything gets done, it will be done via a java interface through IRC. That should keep VISA and his friends out of the picture, they're everywhere I don't wanna be. |
