windows NT seems much much fsater than win98, like after many hours of use, photoshop or webbrowsing, then open some folder from the harddrive(or my computer, or control panel, what ever), win98 will take a long time to load up the folder, winNT is like a blink of eye, it just pops up.

does it have anything to do with harddrive partition at all? if so, I would divide my haddrive and install win98.

i doubt it has to do with the partitions at all. default installation for winNT 4.0 is fat16. you can opt for NTFS if you need more security, but you cant access it from dos if you run into problems. win98 installs on a fat32 unless you cheat and use fdisk to create your partitions without large disk support. or use partition magic. its been so long since i did a dual boot between NT and win9x. its somewhat tricky to install win9x once you already have NT installed.

the operating system as a whole can run with a much smaller hard drive and less ram than is needed for win98. it seems to manage its resources much better as well. of course, im spoiled rotten with the NT family. theres no way ill switch back.

how much RAM have you got installed? that could play a role too...

your OS has to swap out RAM whenever opening a new program and as such if you dont have alot of RAM this could be the reason for your s;ow reaction time... maybe

my NT server rarely goes down. has 56 meg ram and runs photoshop 6.0 beta. win2k almost never goes down and also runs 6.0 beta with 128 meg ram. only time i see problems is if im running several progs at once. usually, the problems happen if ive been playing ultima online. the client has tons of memory leaks.

Galaxal - that sounds *very* much like a problem I'm currently having but I've ruled out the sugeestions of our friends here, Sasha and VP. I think I may have hardware problems or a bad install. I'll get back to you here if I find a fix for it.

WB sasha, where you been?

I have 64 factorial ram and + 32 addon.
oh, winNT rocks, it crashes only once, and that's because I wanted it to. I used wingate to do internet connection sharing, and I went onto www.zone.com and get into the rooms at the same time while the zonefriend was on, this is a known bug and it crashes most of the time. WinNT really rock, when I test my webpages, I had photoshop5.5 open, 3 IE browsing windows and netscape open, and wait, I think I had cuteftp open and.. things running in the system tray include wingate, Guildftpd(personal free ftp server), msn messenger blackICE, and of course winamp, It still run, switch between programs swiftly, except one thing I don't like is that mp3 discontinues when the cpu is really busy when I do heavy tasks.
the thing I love about NT is ctrl-alt-del, it always hears me, unlike win98.

tell me if win2k is better than NT, or if winME is better than NT.
I forgot which sequels which.

Win 2K is NT 5 Win ME is the upgrade to Win98.

2K was supposed to be the newset versions of both. Microsoft was trying to combine NT and 9x into one platform but failed which is why they ended up releasing the 2.

Burwell:
some some, actually, almost all window98/95 programs can run on NT. so far, only Microsoft Macross do'nt work on NT, and my USB hardware drivers can run on NT because NT doesn't support USB, I hope win2k do.

so, before you buy a software, just check the outside, they always post under what OS it can be ran, and even they don't, you have 50%/50% chance that it will work on NT.
