Anyone know of a good search engine that you can plug into a fairly simple site? It's basically an 'about us' kind of site but it will have a lot of product information on several different pages so I'd like to be able to put a search tool in there but I know *squat* about it. The freer the better, these folks are cheap.

This is truly a longshot, but I think that function is included in IIS4, if thats the platform your client is being hosted on.

I'm not sure, and I have no clue how it is set up, but I think I overheard some of my techies mentioning it...

Anyone else know?

hey JK, has your site got access to a cgi-bin? if so check out these scripts resources below,
http://www.worldwidemart.com/scripts/readme/search.shtml
http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Searching/
http://www.bignosebird.com/carchive/search.shtml

they are all free to use and I think they are fairly straight forward to configure..

hope that helps

yeah, I was figgerin on something CGI but their host has formail and 4 other worthless scripts listed and they're huge and hard to get ahold of to talk about such matters.

What do you think of my chances of getting PSInet on the phone and discussing some CGI scripts? Really. Not a rhetorical question, anyone have experience with talking to huge hosts about stuff like this?

<e>Nimraw, isn't IIS4 a Microsoft thing? I'm on a Unix server here...</e>

worth a try, after all you (or your client) is paying for the service right?.. I presume?... all you need is your cgi-bin and you should be good to go...

I have talked to a few hosting Co's, on behalf of the client and so far my experiences have been pretty good... they usually are helpful if maybe not as quick to act..

wish ya luck ~Vp~

Webmonkey has links to free search engines and probably all the info you need.

Doesn't seem too hard

I went to Google and plugged in ozones and made a search page real quick. Eh, it's aiight. Quote:

"Searched pages from ozones.com for photoshop. Results 1 - 10 of about 76. Search took 0.38 seconds."

It's really pretty cool and fast. You can customize the look and it just kicks out some code that you insert into your page. It wouldn't be suitable for what I'm doing though. They advertise a little so you could conceivably type in a keyword on my site and get an ad popup for your compettitors site. That would suck. Cool for personal pages though for sure and probably not a bad way to invite their spider over to your web. I'm sure they had ozones.com cached already however... it was super-fast.

Off to webmonkey now, thanks Lotiss. Been there a thousand time but never shoppin.
