Does anyone know how to define a domain name in windows so it looks at the hosts file before the DNS server? I have put this in it:

192.168.1.169 opticburn.dhs.org

but no luck. I'm not very good at windows so I don't know of any good resources for windows either.

I am not quite shure if i undertstand what you want but let me try:
If
you want a directory(map) with the name of an DNS server????
Then don't give in a name with so many dots windows uses a dot as border between different parts of the name. Then you could better make a directory like C:\What-ever-name\Files\ and then in you html docs use relative adresses like

code:
<A Href ="/What-ever-name/Files/ > link </a>

If you have a local network And you want to give the server a name you have to do this in the network options. But i don't know where it is exatly statet since i don't have a network.

A good starting point is the Microsoft-Knoledgebase

There might be several reasons why this doesn't work...

One of them is the name of the file. Did you put that in &quot;HOSTS.SAM&quot; file which is provided as a sample? If you did, then rename the file to only &quot;HOSTS&quot;.

If you did above correctly, then there's probably something wrong with packet routing, because I see that IP address you specified belongs to private intranets. Try accessing the site by its IP address, if you can't access it, then use the &quot;ROUTE&quot; command to define which gateway to use for that IP range. On the other hand, if you can access site by its IP address, then the problem is somewhere else...

How would I rename it to something without an extension?

Ok, it's in your WINNT directory off of c:/ - in the "drivers" directory. You've got two files here, "hosts" and "lmhosts". I honestly don't know which one to modify, so I always do both. If you spec your IP and domain name here, in both places, as you have shown in your post, it should work. I feel I must point out that I am a MACINTOSH person, and have no business knowing this kind of stuff, heh.

OpticBurn, to rename it to something without extension simply use the rename (F2) function. Oh, you'll also need to de-select "Hide file extensions for known file types" in the Folder Options.

BTW "LMHOSTS" is only used by Microsoft Wins Client (NetBios over TCP/IP), so modifying only HOSTS file should be enough.

Could someone tell me why you would want to do this? What does it accomplish?

Okay I'll explain everything here:

I have a LAN, I use a router to connect my lan to the 'net at large. When I use my signatures(maze thing at bottom) I use the address opticburn.dhs.org which is the IP address of my router, now the router is set up to forward requests on port 80/8080 to my server, which is local IP(the world can't see this IP) 192.168.1.109. So when I look at a forum page with any of my images in it, it links to my router, and since I'm behind the router, it doesn't forward my requests to the server, instead it thinks I'm trying to access the router configuration software, so it brings up a password request, and I can't see any of my own images. So now I've explained the problem, the solution is I defined opticburn.dhs.org as 192.168.1.109 on my local computers, so instead of accessing the router, they look for the server. Make sense?
