Preserved Topic: Still having trouble converting images.... (Page 1 of 1)

I downloaded a couple of converting programs and attempted to use the batch conversion tool. It converted my images from .bmp to .gif but the problem is, my new .gif images still are not animated! What am I doing wrong, or maybe, what am I not doing?

Woah woah - you never mentioned *animated* in the previous post. Tsk tsk - holdin' back information.

An animated GIF is a series of frames that are permitted to behave as a single image file by the GIF specification. That means you can upload one file, but it contains several frames.

There exists software, both free and for $$ that will create animated gifs. I can't speak to what's available for free for a PC. Suffice it to say, it's considerably more complex than converting a .bmp to a .gif. All the frames have to be prepared in advance; all frames should be pretty close in size; the software will deal with issues like master color palette and frame disposal and how long each frame lasts before the next replaces it, and whether the animation loops continuously or not ...

It's not brain surgery (hey - I've managed it!), but it isn't a simple format conversion either.

So - what do you have to start out with, and what do you want to end up with?

There are several images (spirit dancers and others) that I have adopted in The Site Fights, however, the instructions are to save the image to your hard drive, then upload to your own server. I did that, by right clicking and choosing save picture as... Homestead (which is where my site is) doesn't allow me to upload .bmp images, which is what all of the images are at Site Fights.. I had to convert the images to another format in order to use them. Thing is, these .bmp images are animated and I'm not able to benefit fully from the images. Funny thing is, I uploaded one of the .bmp images to another server, wrote a few lines of html to see if the image animation would work that way, and it WON'T!! So I have no idea what to do! I'm afraid at this point I have to bail out on you. Sorry! So far as I know, .bmp (a windows specific format) is not commonly used on the internet because -- it's platform specific as opposed tp .jpg, .gif and to a lesser extent .png.

I have furthermore never run across an animated .bmp. Why they transfer to your computer as .bmps I have no answer for. Why they have lost their animation I likewise have no answers for.

So, being all out of answers - anyone else have more experience with Spirit Dancers and Site Fights that I do? Is there a URL we could try downloading images to see what happens on our computers?

Here's the url to the little spirit dancers.. try saving one to your hard drive and see what it gets saved as. I have tried several times, and it always saves as .bmp... and they are animated!!!

Woe! I don't believe this!!!! I just went back to the spirit dancer page and tried saving the images again and they are now saving as .gif images!!!!!!! Evidently I had something screwed up with the computer... everything works fine now.

(when ya save next time, you can check the file extensions by looking in your 'save' window prior to clicking 'ok', well thast true using win9x, not sure about our friends and their apples)
