Hmm, hate to say this guys, but I enabled HTML there *months* ago! I've been waiting and waiting for SWF siggies, thought maybe you weren't interested, heh.

Hmm.
I don't know Doc... you could be pulling the wool over our eyes here...
As I re-call, the HTML was turned off down there when I last made it a point to check...
I'm pretty sure it was off when I first walked into the Asylum.
As a matter of fact.... I also re-call e-mailing you about this subject.
Blah blah... anyway... it appears this may be some sort of conspiracy...

Waiting for swf siggies you say?
Although the right place to post siggies is in the Sig forum.... I think I'll hop over to the Multimedia section and drop off a little siggie I made just for this occassion....

Boudga's Rant of the Day:

Does anyone here share my boredom with Flash movies??? I get really antsy when I surf and often times look for the 'skip intro' link on peoples homepages cause it seems like everyone thinks they have to have a Flash movie...

Yeppers. Flash interfaces can be cool, but "intro" movies rank right up there with animated GIFs in my book! Sorry about that, but it's so... I guess what I'm usually trying to say is that just because you *can* do something, doesn't mean you should! I'd dig little fun movies interspersed around the site, but as content, not as a roadbloack to get in the door!

if you know flash, great! Make a site.....not a movie! (or at least not an intro movie...)

To me Flash movies should be compared to the use of salt to flavor food. Don't over salt or you'll ruin the food!

BTW...regardless of the fact that I've been ranting about overuse of Flash, I would like to say that http://www.gabocorp.com has a pretty cool 'coming soon Flash movie trailer'....

That gabocorp thing was cool. At the end, what is that loop of music playing? I like it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates those intros. When I worked at the firm in California, half the clients wanted a really "jazzy" intro to get people's attention. It was like pulling teeth to convince them it was a bad idea. If a visitor is at your site -- you already *have* their attention! Make them sit through a pointless animation every time and you'll lose it real fast.

Almost annoying are those "click to enter" pages. Someone tell me why those are necessary.

Well, there's a few practical reasons for those actually. Two off the top of my head, and both have to do with bookmarking.

The first would be that bookmarks aren't real keen on frames at times...and neither are search engines. So to assure a stable base where people can bookmark in case your interior pages are in frames, it's a good idea.

The second is in case you've realized that Netscape, and IE are just the teensiest bit different in how they handle your pages.....but you're a perfectionist....you cross browser design to the point of having two separate sites for each browser (or at least two separate templates for the content to be called into)

Now, you need to do a redirect..simple of course....BUT, you don't want the Netscape users bookmarking the Netscape redirect page and sending it to IE users to view.....but that's what will happen if the redirect is automatic onload of the first page.

So, there's a couple..I'm sure there's more.

Most of the time, it's just vanity for a splashpage though....a canvas to dick around with no need to abide the site template.

Peter

HTML in the Multimedia forum? Geez, haven't visited there in ::ages::

Flash depends on how its used. GaboCorp is a perfect example. When its done nice it looks good, however theres a lot of sites that just don't need it. Funny, I first saw gabocorp.com I guess about 2 years ago. Mint site, really nice. Love the revolver interface anyway, I think its been offline since then lol. Someone needs to get gabo under control

Yah. Gabo has always done cool stuff, but so infrequently! This is only the third version of his site I've seen, the first one was the coolest, with the "Akira" soundtrack behind it, and some actual content inside! Then the site wnet down for quite some time, nothing but a splash. Then a year or so later, another cool site! But the content was gone. Then down again, and it's been "coming soon" for over a year now. No doubt, he's good, but I wish he would leave the old stuff up to look at too! That's how I do it, anyway, heh.
