Preserved Topic: Maximum Characters? (Page 1 of 1)

Do you know what is the maximum number of characters that the URL can contain. The visitor's browser crashed on one link that had 260 characters. Could it be the reason? I wasn't able to find any answer on the internet. Thanks!

If there *is* a limit, although I've never heard of one, 256 would be the number that I'd expect.

I seem to remember a security bug that used to exist with long URLs, you could send 255 characters and then insert system code after that and windows would process it! Great fun, you could send shutdown commands, that was the one I remembered best. I was pretty sure that that had been addressed, maybe the solution to the security hole was to make the browser crash instead! Hee hehe HOhoho!!!

See if you can find from the visitor which browser OS combination they were using. You might also want to try creating shorter URLs! If you're passing form information along with the url, maybe you'd be better off sending it as method=post information.
