Could anyone give some info or a link about copyrighting original images, logos, songs, etc? How you go about doing it blah, blah, blah....

I took Advanced AfterEffects 2 as an elective in school instead of Copyright Law. What can I say, green-screening and special effects sounded much more apealing.

Thanks.

there was a thread just recently on it.. had a good link from there
http://www.OzoneAsylum.com/Forum1/HTML/001019.html

also.. a cheap and cheerful way we did it back in England as youngsters was to mail a copy of it, to ourselves making sure the postmark date was clearly visible, then when you recieve it, make sure you dont open it and keep it in a safe place.

If you really want to endorse your work as yours, you can register it through a lawyer/solicitor/legal attorney (whatever country you err from) as follows:-

  1. Take all your originals to whatever legal company you wish to use.
  2. Ask them to draw up a simple document giving you ownership/legal rights to the same (you may require proof here).
  3. You sign it, it is witnessed, dated and filed.
  4. Pay them and lodge your copy of document somewhere safe.

....and that's about it. I doubt it will cost you more than $100, if you are concerned about your work it's a small price to pay. However, I would think the best person here to confirm what I'm saying (or otherwise), would be Shiiizzzam, she is from the legal world.

Hope this helps.

OK, thanks for the info Phil, VP. if anyone else can enlighten me further, feel free-
Shizzz if you read this and can tell me a little more about the legal aspect, that would be cool. In the meantime, I guess I'll be mailing myself a lot- what a great trick!

no probs.. but it is important that the post offices stamp is readable.. i.e. the date!.. if the date is not readable and if the package has been tampered/opened... then its not as good.... plus like Phil says , going with a lawyer/attourney or even a copyright office/patent etc is more advisable if whatever you need copyrighting is *very* important!.. regardless to say that involves more moeny! heh, but is undoubtedly the more secure way to go.

Just adding an addendum. I used the mail to post cassettes of music/poetry to myself! been a long time!

I seem to recall the mail method as no longer being an accepted form of copyrighting work. I know it used to be but I don't think it is anymore. Too easy to forge though it would help should matters come to court.

Generally though I think (at least in the US) anything created privately and originally after April 1st 1989 is copyrighted and protected.

Note this just has to do with copyrights, not patents or tradmarks those are different

This is not my area of law....... however as far as what I am able to find and after just getting
off the phone with a attorney I do work for ......bitdamaged is correct.

The one you must be careful of is of course getting things registered. That can get costly.

Just another "ditto" for bitdamaged there - I know a playwrite who used to use the mail-to-yourself method, but it no longer holds up. But, if you're really worried about being able to prove your creation is yours, it really isn't very expensive to register your work at the U.S. Copyright Office.

From the USCO Web site:
To register a work, you need to submit a completed application form, a non-refundable filing fee of $30, and a non-returnable copy or copies of the work to be registered.

Well, I'm glad I didn't go out and buy a ton of stamps last night. I think I'm going to try to register through the copyright office like Wes said and try not to get attorneys involved at this point.
Thanks for all the help guys!!!

Here's a interesting view of the subject that I brought up in class this afternoon. I also talked
to a attorney

Cyber space/Net is pretty much ungoverned, unowned space......unlike TV or other areas where the
government controls it. Sooooooooooooo........ there isn't a lot you can do about graphics or if your child is surfing the porn sites etc....you could contact their ISP .... however, I doubt that would do you a bit of good unless you are talking pirated software or some ISP contract conditions they may have broken. What if the person that stole the graphic was in another country......then what? Different laws........ just a few ideas I wanted to throw at you before you invest the money.
