I'm finally going to break down and get ICQ. When I went to download.com, the reviews I read said the version there (2000b I think) was a big ram hog and I might be better off with an older version. A few people also said it was crash prone.

  1. Does anyone know if it's true?
  2. Any ideas on where to download older versions?
  3. Any suggestions on which version to download?

Thanks for any input

ICQ has never crashed for me that I can remember.

I always use the updated version.

i absolutely refuse to upgrade from icq99a. as far as i know, you cant download it off the net anymore off of places like tucows or download.com. icq99b is an ok version as well. i burned both versions to cd, so if you want either one, let me know and ill make it available for download. the major difference between 99a and 99b is that 99b allows you to add plugins. if all you do is the basics (send files, urls, msgs), then 99a is good enough.

i always have got the latest version directly from icq.com and besides the very first version 3 years ago it never crashed.... (win2k).
that with the RAM-eating is true about the new versions.
maybe you can log in anonymously on ftp.icq.com and search for older versions.

I've been using ICQ for a while and I've never had a version crash on me either. I always use the most up to date versions and aside from having crappy connection, it seems to work just fine.

Thanks for the replies all.

la'dsasha,
I appreciate the offer. As it turns out, I found a ver. of 99a lurking in the dark recesses of my C: drive. I'll give that one a whirl and see if I need more after that.

Thanks again

I use 99b, and I have absolutley no problems with it. 2000a and up make me vomit. I recommend below 2000a

I had to uninstall 2000a when it started freezin my system. That could be because HP has proprietary sw it doesn't get along with though. Never had a probelm with prior versions.

ICQ 98, 99 and 2000 on my HD. Running on 99a right now and it looks and behaves the way I want it to.
