i hear that other people, as well as myself, when they turn on their machine are getting this error message, however, no one seems to know its origin or the cure.

can anyone advise how to cure it. do i have to reinstall a more recent edition of IE5.5 than i already have? if i put another ie5.5 over this ie5.5 will it keep bookmarks etc. and cure the problem?

the error message is as follows:

EXPLORER caused an exception c0000026H in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff88539.

Explorer is not the same as Internet Explorer.

hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, and look at the programs running. you'll see Microsoft Internet Explorer in that list, along with Explorer, seperately. Explorer, well, I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it seems to be basically the core of the Windows operating system. It's like the main program that everything else runs off of. Sometimes it performs an illeegal operation, and right afterwards the whole taskbar disapears, and then reappears when Explorer starts itself again (it always starts itself again, since it's necessary for you to do anything).

So, um, don't worry about your version of IE.

I have been seeing a lot of poblems with internet explorer crashing after yahoo messanger or MSN messenger is installed. The yahoo service puts that ugly as shit tool bar up there, that does weird stuff. If it is EXPLORER as in the opperating system, then I would recommend an over install of the operating system, that usually cleans up problems, and doesn't cause any lose of data.

I think it is more a 98 problem that a 2000 or millenium problem. Because the newer software is not downward compatable(?). I am not sure, if you keep getting errors like that try the over install if that does not work, getting 2k would be a good idea. It is a superb system. If that doesn't work you could also go to linux for free. Just make sure that it will easily work with your hardware.

Not a reinstall, but an over install. Put in the win98 CD, and then open up setup.exe and run that, follow the prompts and answer the correct problems. What it does is over installs the main system files, which tends to clear up corruption in the different files. I am not sure exactly how it does what it does that is stored in microsofts secret vault of source code, but it sometimes works for me, so it may work for you.
