Even though I'm currently an IT weenie, I used to be a professonal piano player for 11 years (meaning I paid my rent playing--no day job). I "retired" three years ago when my son was born. But occasionally I sub for a friend, especially with some of the bands I used to play with a lot.

So I'll be "working" tomorrow night at a fairly popular local Jazz festival, backing a popular local singer I used to play with for about 8 years or so. It's outdoors, the weather looks real nice, there should be a good crowd. I'll take my camera and try to get some good shots (even though I'm playing around sunset) from on stage. My wife (curvilinear) should be coming along, so maybe we'll sneak in the camcorder and if possible I'll post some MP3's from the show.

Playing through a loud PA system to a few thousand people outdoors is a hell of a fun way to spend Saturday night. I'm pretty stoked. I'm hoping to capture a teeny bit of that with the pictures and video if it's possible at all. Outdoor festivals were always my favorite venues.

My impression was that it went really well. Curvilinear got a good photo. I'm seated at the Steinway on the left of the picture, wearing my usual #FF0000 shirt and #000000 pants.

It was a perfect night, cool with a light breeze. We played last on the lineup. I would guess there were between four and five thousand people around, but they were really spread out over this huge park-like area so it's hard to know.

The sound system was better thatn usual at an event like this. The sound on stage was truly excellent, and I understand from talking to people out front that it was nice and clear out front as well. I was playing a full-size Steinway grand piano that was rented for the occasion. The mikes were nicely placed, and I had a really hot stage monitor with my own mix.

We started playing right at dusk, and played 90 minutes with a 5 minute pause in the middle. I did get video on my Sony Handycam, but I haven't reviewed it yet to know if it's any good. If the sound is ok (i.e. free from racket generated by my kid and his cousins) I'll encode some of the tracks and post some MP3's.

We played a real variety of tunes, from jazz standards to 70's R&B to gospel-tinged soul to torch songs to nasty blues. The crowd was really great and quite involved in the set. I was playing with guys who I knew and who knew me well, so there was a good rapport among the band members. We weren't as tight as we could be (I literally haven't touched an instrument since I played last, six months ago or so), but we were certainly good. I did get to sight-read a couple tunes I hadn't played before, but that went really well also, because lines of sight on stage were good, and the drummer fed me cues when I needed them.

Hey dood - can't tell much about what that hard-drivin' left hand is doing, but it appears you're plinking out the melody with just your index finger

You type code the same way??
