Preserved Topic: Statistics Analyzation Package

So, my old Web host used HTTP-Analyze to parse my statistics and it was pretty thorough, especially with the referrers list. But, I have since switched to DreamHost, who uses something called Analog, which is sadly inadequate.

I attempted installing HTTP-Analyze myself, with no luck. I asked the DreamHost support staff to help me out, and after giving it a go, they said "no can do." Apparently, it needs root access and they can't allow that.

So, my question is this: Does anyone know of a great, thorough stats-analysis program that I would be able to use without installing it at the server level?

Even though they have many other great features, I may have to switch away from DreamHost if I can't get decent stats analysis.

Might give Urchin a try. They use it at Alienhosting.com and it seems pretty comprehensive.

Webalizer is the package that my host uses.

The real issue is: what's the ownership/permissions of your log files?

If DH is telling you that HTTP-Analyze requires root, it probably means that the httpd logs are owned by root, not readable by your userid. That would be bad in general for your chances of running any stats package. But it's really good for your hosting provider. Allowing non-root users to own (and especially write) log files is a serious security hole.

If you can read your log files (meaning your uid on the webserver host), you should be able to run Webalizer (which I also use and like). If you can't, you're pretty seriously out of luck. You'll probably still need assistance from the hosting provider to install, especially if you don't have shell access.

I've used these guys and they're pretty thorough for free.

Wow, Urchin looks great, but probably too extensive for me to install.

Linear: I can read my log files -- it's just HTTP-Analyze that can't be installed solely in my directories. It has to be installed at a lower level and they won't do it.

My biggest concern is getting something to list all the referrers -- not just the domains or just the top 100 pages, but all the referring pages and link them so I can check them out. I'll take a look at all the recommended programs and see what they'll do for me. Thanks for the suggestions.

Webalizer may not be what you want then.

here's a sample which has referrer analysis in the detail pages. You can set the number of referrers very high in the config file and hope you get all of them that way.
