When using windows explorer in windows 98, is there any way to specify which hard drive it opens up and displays when you start explorer up.At the moment I have two hard drives, one for windows etc, and one for data and programs. Whenever I go into Explorer it always show the contents of the windows hard drive which is very rarely the one I want to view.
Surely there must be a setting somewhere i can change?
Cheers

Change Windows Explorer shortcut to "explorer.exe d:" (where "d:" is the letter of your second HDD)...

You can also specify a directory for explorer to start up in like that.

I put shortcuts to all my drives on my desktop, and when i want to explore one I right-click on it and choose explore.

or do that to the my computer icon and pick a drive.....

in the same vein as Trix's Q, can I change notepad, or word, (or any MS application ) default save/open path?

ie whenever I wanna to open a html page in notepad or wordpad, it always defaults to 'My Documents". Can I change that to default to a folder/partition of my choice?.. that would fantastic.. am running W95 and W98

anyone? ~Vp~

This might be a shoot in the dark, but maybe some of those applications will set startup folder to the same folder that is defined in the "Start in" property of each shortcut.

Changing the shortcut to "explorer.exe d:" merely opens up a folder view of drive d: on my pc, not the usual explorer view.

The following should work fine on Windows 98: change the explorer shortcut to
"explorer.exe /e, /root, d:\"
replacing d with whatever your drive is.

The /e opens an expanded view of the d:\ on the right pane
The /root selects d:\ as the root of the folder tree on the left pane, instead of the Desktop which is the root by default.

Don't forget the commas and the backslash at the end!
Hope this helps.

The other command-line parameters for explorer.exe are:
/n which forces the creation of a new explorer window
/select which highlights a folder and displays the folder's parent on the right pane.

Remember: the only "dumn" question is the one you don't ask.

I know, dumb post. But I just had to.

By the way, I'veonly just noticed how I spelled "dumn", stupid, stupid, stupid.
Anyway I'm going to try those suggestions now, get back to you in minute.

Nice one nocturne, that worked a treat, I can't seem to get the bit right that tells it to view a certain folder in the right pane at the moment, I must be getting the syntax wrong or putting in the wrong place. If you could give me an example so that it shows d:/mydocuments for example, that would be coolness.

I'm trying... will let u know if I reach there. I don't think its really possible to display d: as the root in the left pane and have My Docs in the right, but hey, methinks I'm missing something somewhere...

vp: as for changing startup path for notepad or wordpad...it's a bit tricky and it will be a system wide change, but you can try if you want:

open up Regedit.exe and hop to key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
then you will see something like "Personal" pointing to "C:\My Documents" folder change it...
otherwise you can dload TweakUI 3.0 and let him make the changes for you.
