If the Doc decides that there is a need for a 'second' asylum (for when this forum is not available), I thought we could spend some time coming up with a suitable name - my entry: asylum secundus.

I like the name, but isnt that to much work for the Doc!?, I mean another Asylum!? Where we would go if this one isnt available, I dont think that a lot people would actually visit that forum, because the Asylum isnt down that much, to be honest, since I have been here the Asylum has been down once! So, I think there is no need for a second Asylum. I do like the name, if the Doc decides to make another one I think that would be a good name...

Yes I agree that there is no need for a second asylum, however there are alot of people as of late that still can not get to view the asylum. I have gotten 3 e-mails saying that all they see is a blue screen of death that says dreamhost and that the site is down. I must say that all 3 of these people resently installed 'ZoneAlarm' and may need to adjust thier settings so that they don't block the internet servers, however if ZA is not the problem I would wonder what is going on.

Ahhh, I think I understand now, Ini. You mean making the asylum 'seamless', so that in case the site is down, the 'spare' would then kick in?

dark, with all respect, but ZoneAlarm has absolutely nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Dreamhosts BlueScreenOfDeath.

i cant understand how you come to that conclusion....

and i also dont think, that there is a need for a "second asylum". dreamhost is down twice a year for half a day. i think you guys should accept that.

Why should that be accepted, Grumble? If it can be made better, then why not? Some of the people here are among the best in the business, and set standards, that the rest follow. I can't see that as being a step in the wrong direction...just hate when someone says 'that's just the way it is, so accept it'. Been fighting this type of mentality my whole life.

sorry, but my opinion is that just because of these 2 days in a year, opening a second asylum is not sensefull.
just my 2cents.

Well, I kinda get your point, Grumble. I do know (now that Ini has explained the logistics) that it would be difficult, and probably costly. Maybe if we all join together, we could do it. Has anyone else ever heard of such a thing? I have never before heard the term 'mirror' site, before today. Is it a common thing? Or rarely used?

Yah, the "spare asylum" is one thing, but a full mirror can be a hellish prospect to set up, it can be done, but the amount of server activity in the background is kind of complex, we create and write to a *lot* of files, each second of the day, it seems!

There *is* some kind of cache problem somewhere, I just got another email about the happy "dreamhost unavailable" screen people have been getting, it bugs me. Somewhere, there is a cache-server that simply won't give it up, hrmph. Dark, these people you know, are they all coming in from the same place, a university, perhaps? Schools can try and cut costs by installing such things, it does sound right to me.

surely we could have a second asylum to bitch about people in THE asylum using different user names and then we could have a third one to bitch about people in the second asylum because they're bitching about people in THE asylum. Cool huh

Doc, Does't Dreamhost offer 99.9% uptime? And I seem to remember you saying that all of your other domains (All the Ozone stuff) were hosted at Dreamhost as well. If this is so, then why does the Asylum go down but not ozones.com, or handson.nu ???

Well, whenever I've checked these sites have been up when ozoneasylum.com has been down.

Doc actually allewyn can not view the asylum right now, he has been gone for 3 days, he e-mailed me and I suggested ZA as the problem, cause I blocked myself out on time with it. He sent me a picture of the blue screen of death. So I didn't know what to tell him. So GRUMBLE , InI just chill.

You tell me why Allewyn hasn't been able to view this site for 3 days?

Dark, no one likes a sore winner any more than a sore loser.

Besides, Isn't allewyn a Uni student??

If so, then the Doc's server cacheing scenario is a much more feasible culprit for a problem like this.

Actually, all of my sites except for the OZONE are hosted with Dreamhost, The OZONE is still hosted with VISI, and they've got way better than 99.9% uptime, uber-geeks there, no doubt. Visi is really pricey compared to the plethora of webhosts out there today, but if you were talking "mission critical" here and had company money to spend, that's where I'd host everything. I'm pretty sure that if the Asylum is down, Handson is also, they not only are at the same host, they live on the same machine!
