Well I just updated my PC to win XP. It's fairly nice, but it's a little two microsoft friendly for my likes. Anyone have any real horror stories about this OS? Seems to be a much more stable version of the windows series.

I have been using it for about 2 months now, it is very stable! especially compared to Win98, which I also have on my PC but I haven't used it for a few weeks. I am currently running a P2 450mhz with 384mb of RAM, which isn't the greatest when compared to what they say is the "minimun requirements" for this OS, but I am having no problems at all.

I am formatting and going to Win2K Pro for software reasons; some of my CAD proggies work better with 2K, but XP is a great OS after you learn your way around.

Why are you keeping win98 on your HD?

Simply said Windows XP is Windows 2000 (NT kernel) with new GUI. And it is well known fact that NT kernel is very stable.

BTW I'm also running Windows XP for a couple of months and didn't have any problems with it...

The most problems I have seen with XP are User stupidity. Just talked to someone earlier today who purchased a retail version of XP Pro to install on their home computer, unfortounately their p166 with 32meg ram was just a bit below minimum system requirements. Problems...lets see...If you ever switch motherboards the XP on your HDD will be keyed to the old MBD BIOS so you will have to reload, unless you happen to crack that 'register with microsoft' after you buy your legitimate copy. My favorite is people who loose administrator passwords...reload. XP has some cool features, snap in's are a cool concept, driver rollback is another, system restore...the only good feature of ME got carried over, Compatibility wizard is pretty slick too...zork XP compatible...the hell you say, recovery console works about 1/5 times so its ok to fall back on, restoring to 'last known good' configuration is nice when you jack the hardware, so far its pretty nice.

WinXP dosn't run many older games such as Rune and Dungeon Keeper but Win98 does. So keep W98 for old programs and XP for most every thing else.

I am running ME now and it seems unstable as hell. I am thinking of installing XP, the only problem is my dad doesnt want it. Does anyone know of any good partition software so I can run both? And is it relativly easy to install XP and still use ME?

yes! very easy! winxp comes with a boot manager like win2k.
just partition your hd and install xp on the new one and everything will be fine!

or persuade your dad! winxp is much more powerfull than winme!

well, if you wont loose your data on the disk, you'll have to use some special software for this, like Symantec's Partition Magic. the interface is very easy to use.

your hd is being "divided" into two hds. of course nothing is physically changed to your disk. but the bios detects it as two different drives.

Ahem....Actually, XP can run old games in whatever compatibility mode you choose.
For some light afternoon reading, Microsoft Knowledge Base article (Q292533)
The oldest games I have personally used with compatibility mode are Zork, Wolfenstein 3d, Warcraft II, and Doom II.

Isn't Partition Magic by PowerQuest or something?

And speaking of Partition Magic. If you don't want to waste money, take a look at free Ranish Partition Manager...
