Hello,

I'm kind of new to digital photography. I take mostly snapshops. I've worked with Photoshop on and off since about '94 (used to be a webmaster for Tektronix). My basic problem is getting images to print and look somewhat like pictures.

I have Photoshop V5.5, a Kodak dx3400 and a HP 722C inkjet printer. The printer is supposed to be able to print up to 600dpi. The camera takes pictures, in JPEG, with resolutions of 1760 x 1168 (high res/"Best" quality). I've noticed when I open the images, the default res for Photoshop is 72dpi, at least that what it says in the boxes for "Image Size". I've changed and saved, but that doesn't seem to get me anything better than the 300 dpi.

Within Photoshop, the only resolution selection available in the print box is 300dpi. No more no less. The Printer "Properties" leads me to "Econo", "Standard" and "Best" resolution selections, not much help there.

I want to print images at 600dpi, how do I get photoshop to bring in and maintain that resolution. Any suggestions?

Vic

PS I know the printer's the weakest link, but it's all I have for now.

well, lets see, if the pix from your cam open in photoshop @ 72 dpi (screen res) then you must have either: a camera that only supports screen resolutions, or you've set the camera wrong. Cause if the pictures were taken @ 300 dpi (minimum print resolution) then they would open into photoshop as 300 dpi images. If you still cant figure out why they open @ 72dpi and you wanna give resizing a try, instead of upping straight to 300, try goin from 72dpi to 144dpi, then add a hint of unsharp mask, then go to 300dpi.

now, go out and get yourself _the_ best quality high gloss inkjet paper you can buy. Then run your HP printers "clean print heads" option and have the crust bleed off. Then go into your printers settings and select "best" now if you still cant print @ 600dpi it maybe cause your printer must be set to print on glossy stock for it to print like that (as its like with alot of printers) set it all up and print out a comp.

Im gonna tell you right now, thats the best your gonna get on an older inkjet. Even new inkjet photo prints will still be noticeable (to the trained eye)

We use Dye-Sublimation printers at work, now theres where ya get some good quality.

If all else fails just burn your altered .psd's to a cd and take em to your nearest Kinkos or such and have em print em for ya.
