Hi @all

I'm wondering why you don't install a new board. I mean
there are many diff. message boards around with useful
functions like PM (private message), more hacks, nice
adminpanel...etc.

I several installed the phpBB wich is based on php/mysql. It
is fast and not very difficult to modify.

This question goes especially to all moderators and the guru
himsel, doc :-D

I love this board and it were wrong if we couldn't go with the
revolution *fgg*

I do think Doc is considering moving to mysql someday, though.

In my opinion, it is OK as it is. I don't like message boards with too many features.

I'm far more interested in the interchanges we enjoy here than which board we use.

It's not a bad suggestion, Xdreamer.ch, it's just that I'm sure that Doc is just waiting for the "right time" to do a switch. It's easy to set up a brand new board but a much larger task to migrate one.

FWIW, phpBB2 is looking pretty sweet.

I think it's a give an take situation .. yes having a board with PMs would be nice .. the ability to see who posted the most recent post .. able to see smilies .. etc etc etc .. but the rub is the speed .. this board is still pretty fast for the amount of posts posted per day .. yes I would like to see this board updated .. but at the same time .. the spirit of this board hasn't changed every since I first got here over 2 years ago

I don't think there is any reason to switch board right now. This board works fine, and I personaly doesn't care that much about all the extra features on other boards. As long as it works as it is supposed to there is no reason to change

Yah, I agree with the "not broke don't fix" bit. I would like to migrate this board to a more advanced system, but I don't really think I *want* a whole buncha new features, I spent months stripping all of the extra "features" out of this old version, the reason the asylum works is because it's so simple.

I'm also up to my ass in heavy-code development work right now, and I have no time for the work this migration would demand! The Asylum is not my job, it's just a hobby for me. Even with all of the good help I can draw on here, it'd still be a massive investment in time and money, (need a 300mb SQL database, at the least!) and we would certainly experience some downtimes, guaranteed.

So! It'll come, just not right away.

We're migrating from UBB to vBulletin for the new GurusNetwork site in development. The cool thing about vBulletin is it has built in support for importing UBB data.

Doc is right, though - it's hard to go through and customize it the way you want it (although it appears that vBulletin does a better job of being able to set all this stuff in the control panel than UBB). But if you're like me and like to have the latest version of things, customization is a real pain, since you have to do it each a new version comes out.

300MB, Doc? I doubt it would be THAT big, but hey - anythings possible!

Change is inevitable but...no need to change things here, yet (IMHO). Still, the idea is interesting...

However, I kinda like the way the forum is now. Its what's inside that counts, right? Maybe more concentration on what's here, instead of what could be here, is a better idea...

Just my thoughts...

Hey, Bugs, have you been following phpBB2 for long? I roamed their boards looking for some info on it, but everyone there seems to be "inside" on the whole development and I'm having trouble finding a current, straight-forward status on betas and an upcoming final release.

I hope to add a board to Texas Twisted sometime in the near future and phpBB2 has caught my eye; I just don't know if I want to sift through all the development forums trying to figure out what's going on.

why don't we get our Ceal team together and design a new PM app strictly for the asylum, but separated from it...?

besides... that's why your profile includes ICQ number...

What ever happened to that Java IRC? Did it bomb really bad or something?

PM's are great. you can set it to notify you when you get one. or you can refuse all PM's. and in the profile it would show your last five or ten posts. easy and quick. And IMG tags are done for you with the newer forums. Just click the IMG button. Same with text links. phpBB or even vBulletin would be nice. I'd throw in a few bucks for vBulletin.

OTOH, migration would be big work

Actually, the vBulletin import wasn't too terribly painfull. A learning experience though. The one thing that the MySQL based solutions have over the flat file based solutions is that you can do all kinds of stuff by pulling data from the database. Want to have the 10 most popular threads of the day on your front page? Just pull the data...

Wes,

Actually, I haven't been following phpBB2 for long. We needed to get our church page upgraded and the youth pastor and I just decided to do something rather than wait around.

We first loaded the stable phpBB and thought it was a vast improvement on what we had. It was only then that we realized there was a version 2 in the works. We went with RC3 and so far it's been working extremely well with only minor tweaks needed.

For instance, we had to modify some folder permissions to get the avatar galleries installed.

It will probably be a while before I can scrape the time together to install a board, so I think I'll just wait for the final release, which, from what I've gleaned from the discussions, should arrive fairly soon. It looks great and seems to have some nice features.

Let me know if you run into anything weird or discouraging.
