We have done so.

I've got only experience with SUse Linux
and apache with php/perl and mysql.

It's quite simple to figure it out. The apache
runs daily stable and fast...

I'd have to recommend RedHat or Mandrake .. both user friendly in my eyes .. but I'm sure there are many here that can give good and bad points to every linux webserver available out there .. it really comes down to what your looking for in your webserver .. good luck

I run FreeBSD

well, I guess it's not a traditional Linux-distribution (from what I've heard) but it's stable and safe. (Nope I did not set it up myself. That's what I have friends for )

I've been using RedHat for a very long time. But, now I'm switching over to FreeBSD... BSD kernel is much better when it comes to TCP/IP networking...

BTW Nimraw, FreeBSD is based on BSD OS, it doesn't have anything to do with Linux (although, it has support for Linux binaries).

Thanks Mr.Max

I knew it was something along those lines, but not being a techie myself...

All I know that it was my Linux-freak friends that set it up, and that it runs Apache and PHP.

Most Admin's I know lean towards the FreeBSD distro's since they are supposed to be (as max said) better for networking and more secure. They are closer to true Unix than Linux. All that being said since all linux distro's are based on the same Kernal and Apache builds it shouldn't really matter which distro you choose. I find Mandrake easier to configure, but that's just my opinion.

production Webserver?
I'd probably use OpenBSD. They claim to haven't had a single security hole for a loooooooooong time.

Or, if you need a Linux system, give trustix a try. It's specifally design for server use, and is available for download somewhere on the net.

so long,
