Just an idea

There are SOOOOOOO many useful links to all kinds of web resources posted throughout the posts here...I have looked at quite a few and they are mostly very good.

I wish there was a sort of annotated "bibliography" of links in a variety of areas related to the web.

I wish this list could be the best of the best...stuff that would be truely helpful...and one easy way to get at them rather than lose them in my favorties folder!

Maybe there could be a review panel and have some sort of a rating system in various areas. Rating for info acuracy, readability, level of technicality, etc.

I'm tired of seeing stuff that is great *if you could only understand it* o sea (spanish for "in other words") some sites are so technical that non-total-geeks like me can't understand what the @%#$! they are talking about.

There should be links for each area of this forum. Also, I think the member submitting the link should be included -- so that we can expel them from the asylum if they start making rational sense!

So what do you think --- Doc, do think this is an IDEA?

Well I think that Doc has a lot of stuff being thrown at him right now, but I really shouldn't speak for him.

I was thinking of making a "portal" site for myself with just a bunch of links that were seperated by catagories (i.e. Perl, PHP, Photoshop, etc. . . ) Haven't gotten around to it yet.

Really depends on what your are looking for. Best bet that I could give is check out http://w3schools.com They have just about everything about web scripting and more.

Yep yep, sounds like some good content for a webzine! I've wanted to have a big list of links that people could vote on, something simple like "thumbs up/thumbs down", and the best rated links would, of course, float to the top. Over time we could end up with the best list 'o' links on the net, and they would all be ranked as real people thought they should be. We might need some controls built in, one to keep folks from "stuffing the ballot box", and possibly an override so the administrators could start off a new site with a higher ranking, assuming it was really good. (This would keep the field more even, the oldest sites wouldn't have an unfair advantage.) Possibly the newest links would have a special voting area, just for new links, and after they'd been there a week you could look at their percentile rating and fit them into the big list with that many votes. Fun idea, I'd love to see this! (I also am, as CP mentioned, too swamped to do anything about this yet, but it could be a great project for someone else?...)

What is going on with the webzine? I was all excited about it and had some ideas and little page written and stuff. Emailed Jestah a couple of times but. . . nothing.

So yeah, this would work in the webzine, but what is going on with it?

Yep, that's what I was talking about doing. However, that is a lot better than what I had come up with in my mind's eye

Holy smokes! Good work, Steve. I hopped on over to Rust Boy from there and he's done some updating. Full funding for Rust Boy as of April. Woo! And he added some damn nice hi-res pics as well.

I very much like the idea of a user-rated FFA with various catagories.

I am always constantly amazed by the amount of useful links that crop up here which is why one of the things that is being aimed for in the GN redesign is a Yahoo-like directory of links with voting see:
www.gurusnetwork.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=9;t=000283

and various other threads. Its a little stalled at the moment but should prove a very useful resource indeed (as will other things like the book reviews and FAQs).
