Preserved Topic: Help I think I murdered my HD (Page 1 of 1)

Hi

I think I really screwed up here. I was given a used hard disk that I'm sure was in good working order, and installed it in my old computer to set it up as a Linux box to learn on. I answered the first few questions of the Red Hat installation and decided to cancel it untill I could upgrade the ram and video card. I then started to run the compaq restore disks I have so I could do the upgrades I wanted to, when the restore said it had an error and I had to cancel out of it. Now I have no usable OS on the disk at all, so I started the Red Hat installation again. Now I get an error during the Red Hat installation that says

This occures because the drive geometry detected by the kernel used by the installer is different than the drive geometry used when the drive was partitoned. This can be corrected by specifying the drive geometry on the kernel command line when booting the installer.

If this makes sense to anybody, I would greatly appreciate it if they could make it make sense to me. I'm assuming this can be fixed, but I have no idea how to do it.

Hmmm...format C, maybe? Then attempt to re-install? Anybody else...

There's nothing alive, and I don't have a back up CD for this hard drive. I don't need anything on the hard drive either, I just want to fix it so I can do a server-class install of Linux Red Hat. I don't even want windows on it.

I do have Partition Magic, If you could lead me down that road, that would be lovely. I don't know how to get to the hard drive to format it at this point.

Boot your comp with pm and have a look @
your partitions...
Than format it (not FAT32/NTFS) and try to
setup the red hat again *g*

This is exactly why I like the Mandrake install better.

It makes the whole partitioning thing a breeze. If you have the bandwidth and a burner you may want to try downloading the MAndrake ISO's and installing that.

Oh and about your post on the other HD thread. There's nothing wrong with the Server class installation except it puts a lot of stuff on the HD and is not quite as secure unless configured properly. Personally my security worries are virtually nil I don't put any secure data on my Linux box because it is a sandbox for me and I know I'll configure it wrong

Thanks for revisiting the other thread. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the Linux install that caused me the problems. I think my problems started when I tried to run the Compaq restore disks I had.

As for the server class install...

I was wondering about the firewall. I am using it like you are, as a learning tool. I want to be able to SSH to the shell and stuff like that so I don't know if I should have a firewall at all. Any suggestions in this area?
