sure they do, and besides teaching practical lessons, it's quite fun to work within limits sometimes. Real life is full of parameters.

I think it's great. Those pages can be really neat dHTML toys or anything. Really nice CSS pages won't eat up that much. Check out some of the past winners.

I need a little help...

Right now, my submission is 5671 bytes. The maximum is 5120 bytes. I'm no HTML mastermind, and right now the HTML file is the biggest of the bunch.

The site is at http://www.mahjqa.com/5k/ ... you could start with removing the text, but it doesn't help that much....

If you want to download it, the whole site is zipped at http://www.mahjqa.com/stuff/mahjqa5k.zip

If anyone could help me out, I'd be really grateful.

your table weight 605 bytes, you could cut down on TDs, if not all of them, use a div with the whole bgimage and alter the padding/margin on the content, or another div to position it.

More than one way to skin a cat but you definitely should get rid of all the table cells, if not the table. Good start heck yeah =)

edit: oh yeah, you can take out tabs and returns, just squish all the code into one line, that'll save some, is that within rules?

OK, mahjqa! I'm not sure if you'll be too into this concept, but it seemed to me on looking at this that we needed to clean up the HTML a little bit, but there was no way we were going to make a 1,200 byte file into a 700 byte file, I didn't see it. I just tried playing with the graphics just a bit, giving them a horizontal transparency on certain bits, (horizontal = good GIF compression). ANYways, here's what I hacked up real quick, in 4,671 bytes...

url: http://www.ozoneasylum.com/examples/mahjqa5k/

I'm betting you could do some play with the same concept, but working from the original, higher quality images and get some decent results.

OK, this *is* kind of fun! Here's what I have so far, at 3,677bytes. Anyone have any ideas as to wehat I could do with the other 1,443 bytes I have to play with? This whole thing reminds me of InI's links to the 5k java applet competition, good practice for anyone who wants to be a true coder, IMHO!

url: http://www.ozoneasylum.com/examples/doc5k/

Any ideas, of course, appreciated. This shpould eventually work with IE and Mozilla both, but I'm having some unexplained problems with Mozilla just now, hmm...

mahjqa's design is also being disussed here:
www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum4/HTML/000095.html

Doc: Thats great too - they aren't specific on what browsers the judges will use so are you just going to hope that they aren't going to throw anything odd at your page (it doesn't work in Opera - although I do quite like the big orange square!!)?

quote:
How about client-side processing? Can I use JavaScript? What if the page shows up as larger than 5k in the browser as a result of the scripting?
Client-side scripting, including the use of scripts which write out additional HTML (i.e., by using JavaScript's "document.write()" function) are permitted. The size component of the judging will be done by examining the files which sit on the server, not the browser's rendering of those files. The normal caveats apply however (see the next question); make sure you are confident about your scripts running in the judges' browsers.

and:

quote:
What platforms/browsers do I have to support?
Part of the challenge is that you don't know. Like real life design, if there are compromises to be made; you have to make your estimations and play the odds. Every single judge could be using IE5.5 on Win2k but there could be NN4 on Macs or even Opera on Linux. Love it or hate it, it's part of the web.

If anybody remember what my site looked like, I took that and did some butchering. I whacked the snot out of the CSS. If I really condense the HTML, I might have 2k left over for pure content, maybe a little more. I might be able to fit in several paragraphs of rambling. It's a good thing I really like doing minimalistic sites.

1) CSS and HTML don't require spaces. Take 'em all out.
2) CR/LF -- another thing that can be whacked if you know what you are doing.

I don't know if I'm going to finish with this, though.

The 2001 winner is great!!

but I like that one:

or:

Things that seem to help: humour and animation/movement.

Doc, instead of adding white lines in the *.gif, you could also compress the image 50% in the vertical direction, export it, and then stretch it out with HTML. add the scanines in a separate layer above it, and you're done.

Yah InI, I like that one, and at only 2.7 k, you have room to grow, methinks. The links in the links section, I think you need another style for that, white on white, it no read good!

Personally, I LOVE the fact that so many of us are working on these low-K projects, it's good training for effective coding. <insert generic story of my glory days with my [Atari/Commodore], and [64/20]k ram>
