no offense to anyone who posted there, but to me it seems as if we have waaaaaaaaayyyyy to much senseless nodes without any content there.
like for example work -284
(emps, you are doing a good job there, the above is just an example )

keep in mind that we are now only 4 days running or so and im already loosing the overview.

maybe it wasnt a good idea to allow posting for everyone.
there should be a couple of pals who should structure the thing...

just my 2?-cents.

Heh, WebShaman, cell#397. Kinda like that...

Well, just got done with climbing through the entire FAQ....a couple of things...

For the voting thing...seems that if one votes too often, the flooding control pops up...and I don't mean for just one topic...kinda wierd.

After going back and forth (quite alot, I might add...the navigation is a bit...well, like us ) I got an interesting fatal error....what's up with that?

And after returning to the Asylum boards...all the folders are now red... Why is that? Even when I look at the threads, the folders still stay red...but it wasn't like that before I 'visited' the FAQ...

Oh yeah, just wanted to be the first to say it....

RTFFAQ!!!!!

Other than the above listed things, I must say good work to those who spend all the time and effort to making it happen...I think that when it is finished, it will be awesome...

Yah, we discussed limiting the ability to post on this, your standard "Wiki" is open to *everybody*, no restrictions at all! Here we decided to limit it to registered inmates, which made sense to me. Use the vvoting tool! If you see silly, worthless posts, vote them down, they'll dissappear! (Note to TB: Maybe we could cut this threshold back to perhaps 3 votes instead of 5? Or perhaps it would make more sense to make it 3 more negative votes than positive instead? This would balance out the "whoops" votes that have already happened here.) Posts that get voted out don't really get deleted, they just end up in the admin tool, where decisions have to be made.

GRUMBLE: I could point to an awful lot more nodes like that - I've been sketching out the sections but it just isn'y humanly possible for me to fill all the sections. This FAQ will only be as good as people here make it - which means that people interested in a subject will need to add things as it occurs to and keep an eye on links and such like. I have great hopes for that section and will be adding some of the great stuff that Nimraw posted on copyright and I'd love to see some of the Doc's tips on pricing and more information on contracts, etc. There is also things I can't or am wary of doing - I would like to see the winning sigs from the sig contests posted as well as the originals from the RP but I don't want to link directly to pictures on other people's servers (and I don't have the time to go through and do that). If I've left empty nodes then that is just to encourage people to fill them with content and I've not added a node that is superfluous - there is bucketloads of pure gold in the Archives and old posts it just needs people to dig it all out. There have been a number of people in there testing, adding links and editing (mainly my) typos and Skaarj has even thrown in a mini-tutorial but there is a lot of work that needs doing - the launch was only the first part of the process.

[edit: GRUMBLE: Thanks for the opportunity to restate that - I've now updated the front page to refelct this - its an important point and I suspect I'll be banging on about it for some time!!]

InI: I'll make Asylumite's profiles sticky so they can't be voted off but you might want to give me a clue as to who's profile has gone - I've been keeping an eye on eyezaer (sorry no pun), Dark and PetSkull just to make sure they don't go.

Dracusis: The ability to vote things out is really just a house keeping feature but I'm sure some people will use it for less 'noble' reasons. Nothing gets deleted via this process it gets hidden and then the admins can delete stuff or put it back. We can make things sticky so that they don't even get hidden and I've made the current entries sticky so that we can avoid any problems caused by excessive silliness. I don't think we want to have to do that a lot (I want to leave as much power in your hands as possible) but that seemed wise - it can be reversed once people have had a good play (or if there is a demand now).

emps: that with the work was just an example.

doc: my vision is just that after a couple of months we have so many nodes and such a deep, unsorted, unlogical structure that we cannot speak of a "FAQ" anymore. some information will be there double and more.

GRUMBLE: It is a concern - hopefully the empty nodes will start to fill up (I'll be adding things as I hope will others) and if a node gets too full or someone puts something in the wrong place we can move it. If information is duplicated needlessly then we can edit it out of one node and then vote that node out (hopefully people will look through and see what is already there). It will take quite a bit of work from everyone, especially in these early stages, but with all the talented and enthusiastic folks here it is doable (some people are already doing great work nosing around, fixing, testing, editing and contributing so I think it'll be OK - although we shouldn't be complacent).

Yeah, everyone has a whole bunch of acquired knowledge just floating around in the back of their minds that's invaluable to everyone at some point.

I've been ranting about fonts recently:
- http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/FaqWiki/shownode.php?id=366

Just blabber away ane tie it in with some other FAQ's, then edit the FAQ's you've tied it in with to reference it back again. That way someone only needs to get to a topic close to what they want and they can go from there. If we get a lot of the members here doing this we should be able to flesh it out with mind boggling amounts of cross referenced information in no time at all. It's more like a knowledge database than an FAQ though. I usually think of FAQ's as rather small.

Edit: Typo

It would also be nice to have the ability to move around nodes that you think someone put in a bad place, but perhaps that should be a moderator-only feature.

I'm going to go post these on the feature request node.

Impossible in this case. A FAQ is supposed to answer all of those frequently asked questions, and alot of people ask us the same set of questions (unfortunatley they're very divirsified) over and over and over again.

Just to address something that Drac and Emps were discussing a few days ago...

Is it possible to disable the voting for certain nodes (like, for example, member nodes)? I have to agree with Drac that it's a bit silly to allow people to vote for member nodes. I currently have four votes for me and two against, and I'm still trying to figure out what the heck that's supposed to mean. Even more disturbingly (sorry to bring this up, Drac, I know you probably avoided mentioning it on purpose), but Drac has five votes against him with seven votes for. May I be the first to say: WTF is up with that? Is the Asylum now a popularity contest?

That's just my two cents. I can understand the voting when used to weed out topics that people find to be less than useful, but when it comes to member nodes I don't see the point. I also appreciate that you have made these pages sticky, but it might just be easier to disallow voting on these pages, if that's possible. If it's not possible, then I guess this is just a pointless rant. I hope I'm not whining too much here.

mikey: I hear ya. I almost did the same thing. The way it's set up is kind of confusing. You wouldn't think that clicking on the link would register your vote. I think it should be a bit more obvious, like "vote for this page," or "vote against this page." In general, of course, since I'm against voting on members nodes .

petskull: Yeah, I can understand that, and that's the way I thought of it. But here's the catch: most people, I think, are just putting something up "in the meantime" and will be updating things as they go along. I don't think it's quite fair if someone puts up a tiny little blurb to tide themselves over and they get ten votes against them. I also think it's too easy to confuse "my page" with "me." And isn't the point of voting to determine what stays and what goes? If all the members' nodes are going to stay anyway, why have voting (this is why "sticky" was introduced, but it seems like more of a stop-gap measure than a cure)? Just my thoughts on the matter.

[Edit: By the way, I want to make it clear that I absolutely love the FAQ. I think it's the best thing since kimchi. It's just that I happen to have a little issue with voting on members' nodes .]

And as it has been a week since launching I should say well done to everyone for getting invovled - its only been a week but we have doubled the number of nodes and are approaching 500 nodes. Lets see more of the same!!
