Well this certainly makes things interesting. Korea is currently at the top of the group, with the U.S. just behind, but Korea won against arguably the weakest team in the group (Ducati: from now on let's just assume that I'm apologizing for every negative thing I say about Poland), while the U.S. defeated what is arguably the strongest team.

It wasn't pretty, but it was sweet. The friggin' morons in the next apartment over were rooting for the Portuguese--oh how that steamed me. I want to walk over now and ask them if they enjoyed the game. After seeing today's match, I honestly don't think that Korea has the best chances of going through. If Portugal pull themselves together against Poland (which they most probably will), then Korea's chances get worse.

On the other hand, the US is looking very good. I really wish the second half had been prettier, but a win's a win, right?

I'm going to see if this guy knows any more Americans; there's a pub down the street that has two televisions set up outside, so if we can get a bunch of people together we can go over early and take the place over. Not so early that we're not coherent when the match starts, of course.

And how's this for a steamer: there were actually tickets left for the Portugal-U.S. game! Apparently the British company that handled the tickets screwed up and reserved too many. Not like I had the time to go, but still...

Seriously, though, it looks like the French are in trouble. Henry was ejected from the match?! Well, I haven't studied the group standings, but it doesn't look good for France. Now who was it that was telling me in that first thread that I would see why France are the number one team? The way they're playing, they're not going to make it past group play! And I don't care how much talent you may have, if you don't play like the number one team, then you're not the number one team.

Not only are the French in trouble, but things look pretty bad for Germany...Camaroon played very well against the Saudis...and the Saudis can now start packin'...the first 'losers' of the WM...

Even though I expect the Germans to survive to the next round...it's going to be difficult...I really think it will all come down to whether or not Camaroon can score against Khan...he will either save the day, or the Germans can start packing, too.

Of course, Ireland has to win against Saudi Arabia...but I think they won't have too much trouble doing that...

Ain't the WM great?

Looking pretty bad for Germany? Are you sure? All they need is a draw against Cameroon; their current goal differential would guarantee that they would top out if three teams ended up with five points each--unless Ireland blows out Saudi like the Germans did. If they lose to Cameroon, then yeah, they're gone, but I honestly don't see that happening. I don't think they'll choke. I predict that Germany will come out on top of the group and Ireland will be second.

And where did our British friend aroma go? Were the stakes too high?

Not in group play. It just goes down as a draw, and each team only gets one point, as opposed to three points for a win.

[Edit: Oh, I get it. You're asking why they don't play overtime? Because group play is not elimination. After group play, they do play overtime, and they go to a penalty shootout if that doesn't solve it. Does that answer your question?]

No, they don't get any extra points, but when all the group matches are finished if two teams have the same number of points then the team with the greater goal differential gets the higher position.

Heh...the end game...as I understand it...the first rounds use the 'golden goal' system...where there are two 15 min end game times unless one team scores, then the game is over. Thus 'golden goal'. For the rest of the games, it comes down to goal shooting in the case of equal scores at the end of the official time.

Though in the first match-ups, there is no overtime...I think that begins in the next round...

hope that clears things up for you...

ENGLAND! ENGLAND! ENGLAND! ENGLAND! ENGLAND! ENGLAND! ENGLAND!

BECKHAM! BECKHAM! BECKHAM! BECKHAM! BECKHAM! BECKHAM! BECKHAM!

Also Danny Mills, Rio Ferdinand, Robbie Fowler (when he plays) and Nigel Martyn also play for Leeds United.

Did you know that Veron for Argentina, Beckham, Scholes, and Butt also play for the same club team that is Manchester United?

For all you in confusion if it's a draw in the group stages i.e the two teams level on goals e.g. 1-1 2-2 3-3 etc it stays as a draw each team gets one point,

In the next stage i.e knockout stage when it's a draw extra time is played 15 mins each way, the game is stopped when the first goal in extra time is scored hence the name golden goal if no goal is scored in extra time then it's penalties this means 5 penalties each team and by any chance both teams score the same amount of penalties it goes into sudden death penalties which means if one team scores the other team must score aswell or they lose, or if one team misses and the next team scores they win.

Now there shouldn't be any more confusion ( i hope) regarding the rules.

Lallous: in group play each team plays one match against each of the other teams, making three matches. It doesn't matter if you win or lose, you play them all. After that it's elimination, which means when you lose, you go home.

OK, aroma, I've got to ask, what have you got against the US? I wasn't rooting for Argentina until you showed up...

Not trying to start anything here, but it really pisses me off how Europeans look down on US football. We may be new to the world scene, but we're here to stay, so get used to it.

[lallous: this is nothing. We haven't even broken a hundred posts yet. No reason to start a new thread until it gets really long.]

It was on the radio in the uk yesterday that in one worldcup USA went down 1-0 after five mins to sweden or some country like that and half a dozen USA fans left the ground thinking the game was over and that football was first goal wins!!! i mean how stupid's that?

So the day that USA win a match in a world cup against England, Brazil, or Italy, they will be recognised as a good team but until this day i have always thought of USA as a poor team. (no offence) it's only because you are new to the game!!!!

So Tyson v Lewis any1 up for losing their meds by betting on Tyson?

I love USA Soccer team!!!
they are one of the most fair players I've ever seen!
they are innocents and the most important: their game is very good.

We cannot say that a team is poor because the hasn't beaten any 'BIG' team, you see senegal?
now you can say that senegal is a big team just because they beat France?
I don't think so, I think that today there are no big or poor teams, Brazil won with hurries vs Turkey, and that game was not fair, Turkey desevers to win that. So It's brazil bigger than turkey because they beat them? no, of course not.

Paraguay, you can say Paraguay is one of the big teams, because in South America they are aleays fighting, beating Brazil, Argentina, etc.. But, they matched with South Africa, and who is south africa in soccer?? NONE! so, is araguay bigger than south africa or what?
We have missunderstood some concepts here.

You cannot call a team 'poor' that does not exist. Not in a soccer topic.

And Wakkos say that, Wakkos the European Soccer lover.

Brilliant. Judge all US fans based on the behavior of an idiotic half dozen. I won't deny that there are some extremely stupid people in the US, but you'll find those sort of people anywhere. And what does that have to do with the subject anyway?

Well, we're not as new to the game as you think. The day we win in a World Cup against England, Brazil, or Italy? Would a 1-0 win against England be good enough. How about a 1-0 win against England 52 years ago? But that was a fluke, right? And the Portugal match was a fluke too, right? I suppose it will always be a fluke, even if we end up winning the World Cup. When that day comes (and it will come), though, I won't care what our brethren across the pond think.

Say, when was the last time England won a World Cup? What's that? 1966? Hmm... Considering you guys are old pros at the game, that seems like a long time, no?

But enough of this trash talk. We'll just have to sit back and see what happens. And if I'm gracious enough to congratulate you when England win, I would appreciate it if you return the favor. Cheers!

But let's get back to the matches at hand... did anyone just watch that incredible comeback by Croatia? I turned it on in the second half and they were down 1-0, and it looked like Italy had the game in hand. Vieri threatened to score but put it wide, and the next minute Croatia are back down the pitch and they score! Then Rapaic had an amazing turn around shot that he lofted over the keeper, and it's 2-1 Croatia. Italy had chances to even the score, hitting the post on a free kick and putting the ball in the net offside, but it wasn't their day.

Wow. See, that's why I love this game. Not because of this silly 'my team is better than yours' crap, but because of moments like these!

I must admit and this includes England too many teams are diving at any chance they think they can get a freekick and it's getting out of hand. USA don't seem to employ this tactic and i respect them for it!!!!

Good luck for monday Cheers Aroma.

Ps what time is it when the matches are shown in USA, In UK the matches are shown at 6:30am, 7:30am, 10:30am, and 12:30pm
