Well this certainly makes things interesting. Korea is currently at the top of the group, with the U.S. just behind, but Korea won against arguably the weakest team in the group (Ducati: from now on let's just assume that I'm apologizing for every negative thing I say about Poland), while the U.S. defeated what is arguably the strongest team. |

I had considered going to City Hall to watch the game with the guy I met at the sushi bar, but after seeing what things were like yesterday (with the Korea-Poland match), I'm not sure that's a good idea. I'm going to see if this guy knows any more Americans; there's a pub down the street that has two televisions set up outside, so if we can get a bunch of people together we can go over early and take the place over. Not so early that we're not coherent when the match starts, of course. |

Maniac (V) Inmate From: Seoul, Korea |

Looking pretty bad for Germany? Are you sure? All they need is a draw against Cameroon; their current goal differential would guarantee that they would top out if three teams ended up with five points each--unless Ireland blows out Saudi like the Germans did. If they lose to Cameroon, then yeah, they're gone, but I honestly don't see that happening. I don't think they'll choke. I predict that Germany will come out on top of the group and Ireland will be second. |

Maniac (V) Inmate From: Seoul, Korea |
posted 06-07-2002 14:11
Not in group play. It just goes down as a draw, and each team only gets one point, as opposed to three points for a win. |

so winner wins 3 points? |
Maniac (V) Inmate From: Seoul, Korea |
posted 06-07-2002 14:15
No, they don't get any extra points, but when all the group matches are finished if two teams have the same number of points then the team with the greater goal differential gets the higher position. |
Maniac (V) Mad Scientist From: Happy Hunting Grounds... |
posted 06-07-2002 14:19
Heh...the end game...as I understand it...the first rounds use the 'golden goal' system...where there are two 15 min end game times unless one team scores, then the game is over. Thus 'golden goal'. For the rest of the games, it comes down to goal shooting in the case of equal scores at the end of the official time. |

Lallous: in group play each team plays one match against each of the other teams, making three matches. It doesn't matter if you win or lose, you play them all. After that it's elimination, which means when you lose, you go home. |

But let's get back to the matches at hand... did anyone just watch that incredible comeback by Croatia? I turned it on in the second half and they were down 1-0, and it looked like Italy had the game in hand. Vieri threatened to score but put it wide, and the next minute Croatia are back down the pitch and they score! Then Rapaic had an amazing turn around shot that he lofted over the keeper, and it's 2-1 Croatia. Italy had chances to even the score, hitting the post on a free kick and putting the ball in the net offside, but it wasn't their day. |
