I have been hearing rumors that in 1998, Brazil had debts w/ France and brazil lost on purpose just to be forgived from its debts....

how valid is this rumor?

(personally, i remember how bad brazil played comparing to its other matches)...

That's interesting, because I heard another rumor during this year's World Cup...

Apparently, the Nigerian national team had a whole crapload of money they needed to get out of the country. Fortunately, Argentina were in the same group, and drastically in need of some funds. So what happened is they worked out a deal where the Argentinian national team gave their bank account information to the Nigerian team so they could transfer the funds. As further proof of their good will, the Nigerian team threw the match, providing Argentina with their only win.

Yeah, I also heard that because the NAFTA was implemented, Mexica 'allowed' the US to win...

And, of course, the Germans will allow the US to win as 'reparation' for WWII...

Hehe....love these 'conspiracy' theories....

I tend to agree that this kind of thing does happen. Case in point, the last winter olympics. Canadian fans and hockey analysts knew that without a healthy Mario Lemieux and Steve Yzerman (key players) the Canucks did not have much of a chance. The women's team was even a longer shot to beat the U.S. I heard from a very close friend who's cousin lives in Ottawa (site of the Canadian government) that our Prime Minister, Jean Chretien called President Bush and got the U.S. consent to throw both the women and men's finals - in exchange Canada would help pay off the WTC clean-up and a good chunk of the U.S. National debt (several trillion would be contributed over the next 3 years)

Looking back, I remember seeing Canada struggle in pre-tournament olympic hockey against Botswana and losing by one point to a highly motivated but less talented Cuban team (Castro's nephew was backup goaltender apparently). While I was initially skeptical about the U.S. throwing the game, my friend indeed confirmed this. The real proof positive came today when it was announced that a carton of smokes would go up by about 9 bucks canadian (that's about 50 cents in U.S. currency). This money will go towards paying off this debt.

Anyway, this is all big secret. If Canadian taxpayers found out they would freak out...so please, keep it to yourselves.

Man, in that case Poland had to get some serious money! LOL

all those rumors just crack me up...

BUT

I did hear that there was something with Poland...that they were paid off or something.. but how can you tell you know? I mean.. it IS kind of weird when you think about it...

US beat Portugal
Portugal beat the hell out of POland

Poland beat the hell out of US

US tied with Korea
Korea beat the hell out of Poland..

It just doesn't make any sense to me.

But I did hear a LOT about Poland being paid...these guys don't give a shit! 3/4 of POlish players play for top Europian soccer clubs, they get paid almost half a mil of dollars IN POLAND per year which is HUUUUUGGGGEEE for Polish standards...

They don't give a crap...

MAX

*falls down laughing*

I haven't had so much fun since that thread with CFB and the 'private' forums...

Just to set the record straight...I do not have any, I repeat, any knowledge of games that were 'thrown' in the WC...

And that's the problem with conspiricy theories...someone might actually believe them...

Rumors and controversy always swarm around the losers.

Theres always a story why each team lost. It couldn't possibly be that the US team played a better game then Mexico. The obvious answer was that politicians sat around a big room and decided they would trade this soccer match, for NAFTA and the future rights of a treaty to be named later.

Same thing happened at the Olympics. They have the next 37 World Series played out already.

Next thing you guys are going to tell me is that there were no moon landings and it was all faked in a studio to ensure that JFK kept to his word of "man walking on the moon before the end of the decade". (1960's) Nothing to do with the fact that it is impossible to reach the moon on current (or past, 1960's) technology due to the radiation factor.

Moon landing, indeed...how stupid can one get?

What, you mean there are people who actually believe we landed on the moon?

I have a book called "Peter Nevsky and the True Story of the Russian Moon Landing" by John Calvin Batchelor. It's a very interesting read. Fiction, of course, but based on rumors that circulated at the time.

And I was really hoping cfb would chime in on this thread. It would have made things so much more interesting...
