I have a fairly customised way of working with Photoshop in regards to how it's set up.

Been wondering how other people use it:

--> My Setup <--

Dual monitors, top one is a 15" @ 800x600, bottom one's 17" @ 1024x768. The 15" monitor phyically sits above the other one. I have a corner desk and the sides are walled up with shelves, book cases, and cd racks so there wasn't any other place to put it!

Wondering how you set up a top & bottom dual monitor and make it so the mouse jumps to the other monitor when you slide it of the top/bottom? Go into the display settings, grab the second monitor icon and drop it above the first, or below, or to the right...

That took me ages to figure out! It?s not a well-documented feature. In fact, I only discovered it by chance.

Anyway, how ya?ll working with PS nowadays?.

Well I work in same way as you drac. One pallet for layers, history, ect. Than the tool pallet, and with 7 there is a dock pallet in the options bar which comes in handy to place things too.

Do you need a second video card for the 2nd monitor? If not, where do you connect the extra monitor to the pc? and if so, how do you eliminate conflicts between the two video cards? Not that I have a spare monitor, but you never know what the future will bring.

Witherin: This might answer some of your questions (if it doesn't some good people might expand on the FAQ):

Some video cards will let you connect two monitors, like the new Radeon cards (7500, 8000 and 8500 models I believe). There's also a couple of different Matrox and Nvidia cards they have multi monitor support.

You can also use 2 video cards which is what I'm doing. GeForce 2 AGP and my old Rendition V2200 PCI card. One monitor is always set as the default monitor. Any applications (games) that don't support multi monitor stuff only use the default monitor. You can actually connect up to 16 monitors using multiple video cards (As if anyone has that many bloody PCI slots!).

If your using two PCI cards then you can run into problems with the default monitor that's used on boot. Although I believe that it uses the first video adaptor it finds. Each PCI slot is numbered (not physically) and on boot the computer will set through each one to see what's plugged into it. Any extra video adaptors will be ignored until Windows loads and it has it's own default setting that you can change.

You'll also find that many games will let you select what video adaptor you wish to render the game with. That way you don?t always have to use the default monitor, it'll use the monitor that corresponds to that adaptor/card.

Darkshadow:
There's a dock pallet in the option bar of PS 6 as well. I use it for the Layers, History and Actions so I can maximise the work space. As you can see in da screen cap

Thanks guys. Man, the Faqwiki's getting pretty comprehensive. I'm just going to have to find a day or two to dive in there and give it a thorough going over.

*cough* three monitors *cough* http://www.matrox.com/mga/products/g200_mms/home.cfm - the only way to code, design, debug and surf
the only trouble is that I've got no room left on my desk and I can't use my box at home without wanting to move windows off to another screen...

Yup....a second monitor would be nice......

But, since I don't have one, the onl;y changes to the setup I have made is to seperate the channels pallet from the layers pallet so that they are both always visible.

Grumble: Nope. It's a good setup, created by people who know what they are doing. Nothing wrong with the basic setup.

I have found that you really need a second monitor for working with photoshop, it makes it so much easier to go back and forth between images and files.

I only have one monitor I can use though. I have a GeForce 2, and a 3d blaster banshee, but my banshee card wants to take over and not allow the GeForce 2 to work.

I'm going to add a sig later
