I got it yesterday!

Almost exactly one year after I moved here last summer. The INS said it could take up to three years, when we sent in the application in the beginning of this year. So I am happy that it worked this fast!

This means I am now actually allowed to leave the US without special permission

Grumble, I am originally from Sweden.

The card is not really green, but more of a light tan color. On the back it has some fancy holographic image, and also miniature picture of all past american presidents (at least I think that's what it is, since they are really tiny) Also, all the state flags are depicted. I guess it is all in an effort to make it harder to copy.

Specifically what are the requirements in getting your green card Zox? Also if you don't mind, what were the reasons you choose to get one?

The Green Card means I am a permanent resident of the US, it does not mean that I am citizen.
To become a citizen you need to go through the naturalization process, and this includes knowledge of basic US history and and understanding of the US government. You also need to have lived in the country for at least five years, so it is quite a while for me before I need to go through that process.

The INS actually has sample questions on their website http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/exec/natz/natztest.asp
So now you can see if you know enough about your country to be a worthy citizen
Actually, most of the questions are ridiculously simple, or what do you think of this:

4. What is the national anthem of the United States?
1. The Declaration of Independence
2. The Statue of Liberty
3. The Star-Spangled Banner
4. Born in the U.S.A.

The requirements for getting a green card depends a bit on your situation. I think that you need to be sponsored by an employer, relative or spouse.

My personal reson for coming here is that my wife is American, and we decided we wanted to live in the US rather than Sweden. I guess there are good and bad things about both places, but since she is still in college and does not speak Swedish, this felt like the natural choice.

Congrats, ZOX (sorry, that kind of got left out of my first post... I was busy yelling at trekky). Hopefully I'll be getting the equivalent of a Korean green card this August. So I can imagine how good it must feel to have one.

I discovered a ten-question sample test (different from what you posted) and got all the questions right. Then I sent the URL to my youngest brother (a high school senior), who proceeded to fail the test. This does not surprise me in the least, of course. If every US citizen were suddenly required to take a naturalization exam to remain a citizen (something along the lines of a company reorganization where you have to reapply for your position), I think at least half of the population would have to be deported.

Oh, and as for the sample question you posted: everyone knows it's Born in the USA!
