Hey!! I have my FTP program (WS_FTP pro) but it does not allow me to see the .htaccess files or make some stuff as the .htaccess 101: Security
on gurusnetwork says:

"Step 6: To create the password file, telnet to your server, navigate to the desired directory, and issue the following command:
htpasswd -c .htpasswd <username> (where <username> is a name without the brackets)"

(BTW, I thing there's a mistake Pugzly, that should be the #7 step, not the #6)

And I have to use telnet, but I have no idea on how to conect to my server and stuff.
For now I'll need just conect to my server, but a URL with an extended info will be apreciated too!

In order to see "dot" files, you must configure your FTP client to show all (incl. "system") files. If I remember correctly, in WS_FTP, the option is entitled "Show full directory information", you'll find it somewhere in the options dialog.

As far as telnet is concerned, you'll have to check with your web host to see whether they allow shell access or not. If your web host doesn't allow shell access, you'll have to use web based htpasswd generator to create password file (here's one)...

Good morning mr.maX

I think that WS_ftp pro does not show the 'dot' files, and the problem is that i used a web based pass generator and I want to delete it. but i can't.......

Bah, all I know about telnet is that one of my friends could hack using it.

Wakkos, WS_FTP must be able to show dot files, try to find the option that I mentioned above. If you can't find it, then get a *real* ftp client, like SmartFTP...

InSiDeR, most web hosts don't allow telnet access anymore. They have all switched over to SSH, but it isn't more secure than telnet, either (espcially since the discovery of the famous "off-by-one" error in OpenSSH).

Agauin, thanks mr.maX i sownloaded the Smart FTP and now i can delete all that rare files...

The only thing with Smart FTP is that seems not to have a 'local folder' window (panel?)

Edit: yez! it has it!!

Damn...and I was just about to save Wakkos's day.

Wak, for my own amusement try this in WS-FTP: in that little box to the right of your remote file window, between the MkDir and View buttons, enter -al and hit enter.

If that works and you want to make it stick, go back to your Connection dialog box (you'll have to disconnect), select the remote connection you want to apply it to and click Advanced Properties. Select the Startup tab, and under "Remote file mask:" add -al. Save those changes.

That's using version 6.6; it may be somewhat different if you have a different version.

Grumble, FXP is used for site to site FTP transfers (i.e. from one FTP server to another).

In the main window there is the little small text box. Just enter -a and you will get full directory listing.
