Hmm... moving on from the mac-only fact, I read it's only 16 bits? Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't regular JPGs able to go 32?

I think it meant it *can* do 16 bits if you want smaller files.

This looks interesting, especially the partial transparency, but it'll be years before enough browsers support it. =(

yeah, but it has some nifty features.
Depending on the encoding you choose, either the image grows the more of it's data is transmitted (easy, bandwidth saving thumbnails!), or it's resolution goes up, or it adds the colors one after the other...
btw. it's a wavelet based compression algorithm, I think. (ok, maybe it has a few different algorithms, but most are patented by some group.)
