Depending on the encoding you choose, either the image grows the more of it's data is transmitted (easy, bandwidth saving thumbnails!), or it's resolution goes up, or it adds the colors one after the other... btw. it's a wavelet based compression algorithm, I think. (ok, maybe it has a few different algorithms, but most are patented by some group.)
