i need a laptop. i hardly know a thing about computers anymore (been busy), but i'm gonna be on the road a bit for the next few years and i want to be able to spin decent websites off a laptop, if that's even possible. so i'm looking for something grunty enough to handle the graphics programs, obviously, as well as a bunch of school work and internet and webcams blah blah blah blah. somebody save me from the salesman script... what kind of machine should i get?

The IBM Thinkpad is decent. I use it at home and at work (two different models). They look like black boxes - no fancy shapes or colors or anything, which I prefer. (Professionalism.) They're made to get the job done and they do it. I haven't had any problems.

The disadvantage is that the one I have at home, which was new last summer, has a crappy video card. I don't play many games so that's not a real problem, but it was a slight hassle originally to get it to allow full color (recent drivers released make this easier). Also, the screen is a nonstandard size (1400x1050), and I'm pretty sure the sound card isn't all that great. But it handles Photoshop and Illustrator fine, as well as POV-Ray and whatever other programs I use that I can't think of right now. =)

So, it's powerful, but I wouldn't really recommend it for gamers. (On the other hand, it *can* play games, I've seen my friends play counter strike on their own thinkpads (we *all* got the same model at college), and they don't have too many problems. I don't think the warcraft 3 beta worked on it, though... I'm not sure. You should check this out if you care about games.)

Whatever you do, do NOT get a Toshiba. 5 of my friends have Toshiba laptops, and they've ALL had to get them replaced one or two times (one friend (the one with the biggest, most expensive one) had to get his laptop replaced/fixed about 6 times). Even today none of them work very well.

I have a Compaq Presario, which died on me the first week I had it - but the replacement has lasted a year without a single problem.

Make sure you get some warranty (2 years is good, 1 is fine) on whatever you get! Laptops are little expensive bastards that like to have fits.

I agree with cyoung... Titanium! Easy to maintain, easy to hook up, and works well with PC documents...

thanks u guys

I've heard HP make the best longest lasting laptops .. not to mention IBMs are decent as well .. I don't like Compac .. and Toshiba .. well just say .. plan on buying a new laptop in about 6 months if you get a Toshiba .. they suck!
