Maybe you could contact the company that makes the console, such as Nintendo, Sega, Atari, Coleco etc...They obviously distribute cartriges and you can buy hardware to go from a PC to cartridge. At least, I've seen them for the N64. Your best bet though IMHO would be to contact the companies. I've always wanted to do this, maybe I'll give it a try...

And you'll find that htye won't let you un;ess you're willing t pay a mountain of royalities...after all...that code is their property, they have every right to charge you for it. If they do say yers...make sure you get it in writing.

Wow, amazing what some people will think.

Here's the deal, copyright usually runs out in about 50 years. Until then they can and will charge you a pretty penny for that software.

As far as just creating the art for a game without programming the engine, you can create the artwork for whatever you please. Create a few little sprites and animations as well.

But if you want to do anything with those images, you need the code, plain and simple.

Copyright now lasts 95 years thanks to Disney. Did you know Disney is what makes copyrights last so long? Copyrights are all about Mickey Mouse. Every time the copyright time runs out on Mickey Mouse, Disney is the first one to talk Congress into extending the copyright time. We're lucky Disney's interested in copyright, huh? =)

Ruski: I'm not sure if this is the drection you are interested in but a lot of new PC games come with toolkits that allow you to highly modify the games. I was just reading this article today:

[edit: Started a FAQ so if people want to throw ideas and links in go here:

and Ruski keep us informed on how you get on - good luck]

And an additional fun fact is that the author of the article, Rhianna Pratchett, is the daughter of author Terry Pratchett , whose books I cannot get enough of.

Maybe you could code your own game, I mean, unless it's a super complex, Baldurs Gate 2 with Doom ]

I remember when Interplay released the source code for Descent. Sifting through that was a lot of fun. Nothing like seeing a game up close and personal.

I also remember rumours of Quake source code being released, but I never confirmed.

As far as console developing goes, the price for kits and licences are pretty steep. I priced development kits once and I was absolutely flabbergasted at the prices. At least I thought they were pricey.
