Sounds like a boot sector virus. Haven't heard anything about those since the DOS days, but they were definitely killers. The plague of the PC world. I once saw the boot sector of a 2 Gig drive get overwritten with a floppy disk boot sector so that, as far as the booting OS was concerned, there was only 1.44 megs of free space on the drive. |

it is unlikely that a boot virus from InI's hd f** up his friend's system, unless they booted it off of InI's hd, which i think is highly unlikely |

You don't have to boot off of the drive for the virus to find it's way to the boot sector. It can propagate during the POST to the drives on the IDE channel. |

hmmm. boot sector viruses reside in boot sectors and/or mbrs. the ONLY way for ANY virus to propagate is to get executed. the only way boot sector viruses get executed happens when you boot a system off of an infected hd/floppy. during post one and only one partition is choosen to boot from. unless they've booted it off of InI's hd, i don't see any way for that virus to find its way to the new system. |
