I bet this already has been discussed- but did not find it in a search throughout the asylum. If there is an old post- just direct me to the correct thread.

Question:
1. Do you use a MAC or PC?
2. What is your ideal setup?

Currently I use a PC for graphic design. My company wants me to get a MAC- so I can pass files to/from the New York City office. Just curious what you all use/your preference.

Thanks.

I use a PC at home and at work. Here in my country finding a Mac is like trying to find water in the desert.
At home, my PC has a 3dfx Voodoo 3000 Graphics Card.
I'll bet nobody has a better graphics card than mine...

I use a PC. Sometimes I help out in the production department and they use Mac G4's
Don't really care too much for them though. I'll stick to my PC.

Getting ready to install Mandrake Linux 8.2 on my PC this weekend

PC at home (a nicely but slowish) home built comp and at college I use a MAC. But I really want a MAC they just look good and I can work with it very will as I've been working on a MAC now at college for about 4 months now and fine it just as good as a PC, so problems doing er.....a.....switch.... to a MAC. But if did get one I'd still keep my PC for testing an playing games, etc.

It's just better to have both really!!

Don't know what you mean by setup? what type of setup? hardware or software? or other?

As far as I can see it, mac and pc are the same, it's up to you what you want to work with and works best with you. If your work wants you to get a mac, is it for home or at work? If it's at work let them get you it, play around and see what's it's like if you don't like then tell them you want to stay with a PC. If it's for work they should understand that that you work better, quicker and more comfy with a PC then learning a whole new OS and how thingys go. But really try it, if you don't like it then stay with PC.

Ah, the oldest debate in the world. As Darkshadow says, Macs n PCs can basically do the same stuff. Each has their benefits however:

OSX: the power of UNIX and common open-source standards built-in, integrated OS & hardware means less obscure bugs, BBEdit.

Win: Being able to run most everything, especially games. More aggressive processor development. Cheaper.

Before OS X, I felt like Macs were stagnating and there was no reason to get one. Now I feel completely opposite thanks to the promise of open-source software and the overall slickness of OS X. Depending on your particular hardware and software any computer can either run smoothly or be a huge can of worms. My PCs have always been the latter, and my Macs have always run like a dream (although I've seen nasty problems from time to time in other people's Macs as well as PCs that ran smooth as butter).

I use both a PC and a Mac. So far the mac has been stable, few applications crash, but not anymore... last time it MAJORLY crashed was when I had 8.2 on it (Now it is up to 9.2) and it only got one virus that Norton picked up anyway. For the curious folks out there, it was the Auto-Start Worm, and there is a funny story behind that one too!

PC, I have not had many of the headaches yet... then again, I do not want to hex myself either. 6 crashes, 5 viruses (all of them caught by norton) but no blue screens and that is within the past 6 months. Not bad for a computer user. hehehe.

Over the two, I still perfer my mac. Grew up with an Apple IIgs for about 10 years till I got the old G3. What can I say?

I personally like PC, because I am not used to MAC and it isn't compatable for so many games and such for online use, but for graphic use I guess a mac wouldn't be so bad.

At the moment, I have three PCs.

One 1 GHz Athlon custom built with 384 M RAM and 64 M Radeon 8500
One 1.7 GHz Pentium 4 laptop with 512 M RAM and 32 M Geforece 4 440 Go
One 466 MHz Celeron HP with 128 M RAM and POS video card

And the whole Mac vs Pc thing...I got over that a long time ago. Personally, I love PCs and don't really care for Mac's, but I'm still planning on getting a Mac for my parents. It's (relatively) easy to use and hard to break, so it's good for non-techs. Beyond that, the question is moot. Get what you like. Simple, no?

I have used Macs all throughout my schooling. There are differences, but it really comes down to what you first started out on as far as preference I think. As far as graphic applications (only thing I've used on Macs), they are pretty much the same. Couldn't tell you about other apps though.

This may sound dumb, but the one thing I like more about a PC is the two buttons instead of one on the mouse (are there 2 button mouses for Macs??). I like to right-click things.

PC is my choice, but that's mostly because it is what I'm comfortable with. It's kind of like religion. People don't very often up and change their religion over night!

My advice...build your own PC! Building it is actually fun and therapeutical (sp?) and when you've found out how easy it is, you will be a whole helluva lot more comfortable knowing how to fix it if it breaks, because you've assebled the parts on your own. I have three home-built computers now and I find that I buy one annually just for fun! Bad habit I know, but everybody has a hobby or two.

My setup on the one I use most:

-- 19" monitor
-- 1.53 GHz AMD
-- 240 GB disk space (3 x 80 giggers) -- 2 on RAID 0 Stripe array and 1 for backup (ahhh speed and redundancy!)
-- Radeon 8500 DVA graphic card
-- 768 MB RAM
-- SB Live Audigy sound (hooked digitally to my 450 watt Sony home theater stereo system)
-- 100 MB nic card hooked to the other two systems (network rendering on 3D Studio Max is wonderful)

This setup is ideal for gaming, I use it for web design...pointless I know.

1) work : multi-media production : win2k
2) work : web server : linux
3) home : word processing, home finances, etc. : relic of the past...win 95!
4) home : other stuff : mac 0SX

I love them all, use them all at least a few times a week, most daily.
Like most things in my life, sometimes they run great, sometimes like shit.
I've had my win 95 machine run for months without a hitch, and I've seen my mac and linux boxes crash because I sneezed on them. Other than the interface and software availablility, I see not a lot of difference.

Defidently PC, but that is based mostly off of bias and years of using a PC. I wouldn't mind using OSX, but I'd happilly take Win2k over that any day. As for a more intelligent why, well, the problem I have with Macs is that for the most part they are largely unsopported by major companies. I mean, I couldn't load up my DivX player and watch a movie, then pop in Warcraft ]

I only use a PC, but I dont really understand people who detest Macs becuase they feel like it.
But this is how it is for me:

The reasons I would use one:
.Colours seem to look better on ones Ive seen (but thats really up to the monitor).
.They dont crash (or at least very little)!
.They look pretty cool
.They run fast
.Easy to use

Reasons I wouldnt:
.Ive used a PC for years without problems or at least without problems I wasnt able to fix.
.They run more games not that Im into that really
.a wider range of software **
.upgradable(a lot more so)
.Macs are way too expensive
.Its easier for me to get pirated software for PC ( if I were so inclined )
.Everyone I know uses a PC
.Laziness .. why change ?
.My PC does everything I'd want to do on a computer plus more.

So thats WHY I use a PC, not that you asked that.

Ideal ? mmh
=2.4Ghz(I think thats the commercially available max isnt it ?)
=260gb SCSI
=2048mb RDRam
=two 21" monitors
=two nice surround sound systems hooked up to the one 5speaker card. So that I'd have two subwoofers (done this before) its great for the 3d effect in games, you can feel the noises infront + behind .
=one of those Rewriters that go like 24x RW
=My 12x12 Wacom
=Some sort of Case mod to top it off

The best computer I have at home is:
- Pentium III 733 MHz
- P3v4x ASUS motherboard, with Via 133a chipset
- 256 MB SDRAM
- 3dfx Voodoo 3000 16 MB graphics card (old, isn't it?)
- Matrox Mystique 220 graphics card (way older...)
- two 17" monitors: one Sony EPD-200 (the main one), other Samsung Syncmaster 17 GLsi
- MS Internet keyboard
- MS optical intellimouse (good for left-handed people although I use both hands for the mouse - left hand at home, right hand at work)
- a regular Sound Blaster PCI sound card
- an old Motorola 56 Kbps ISA winmodem
- a NetGear 10/100 card (to connect to the notebook/other computer)
- a 32x-4x-8x CD-R by Creative
- a 24x CD driver by Creative
- one ATA 66 30 GB Maxtor HD
- one ATA 100 40 GB Maxtor HD with a Promise card to make my system ATA-100 compatible
- one ATA 33 1GB movable (in a drawer) old HD just to exchange data from and to office computer
- an AIWA stereo minisystem connected to the sound card
- a Philips headphone for gaming attached to the AIWA minisystem
- a joystick for driving airplanes in MS Flight Simulator
- dual boot: WinXP and Win2k, although I use mostly WinXP
- a sand circular base (I don't know the right English word for it) bought in the Death Valley for holding my glasses
- a good and beautiful desk for supporting all this stuff (my desk allows me to stretch my legs all the way)
- a comfortable and adjustable chair
- a nice ottoman to hold my legs streched and comfortable
- an old TV beside me, just in case I need to watch TV while using the computer
- a strong garden lamp to make my home office very illuminated
- a caricatural map of Italy framed behind me, so I can learn all the regions of Italy and their main characteristics
- a nice table
- beautiful yellowish green walls all around but one of the walls has a paper that simulates bricks
- two little and very beautiful daughters (they look like their mom, not me :-) that now and then enter the room and so they are part of my office, I need them a lot
- etc. etc. etc....

As you can see, my system is rather old but rather complete and I like it a lot. It does just everything I need, even play the games I like.
