i've been looking around at this forum and the pages that are linked to from here that last couple days and decided that i'll hang around here as long as possible and suck up all the information i can. seen some great pages, as well as some fun people in the forums.

i know a good deal of html and basic java, and some advanced java, and enough javascript to find my way through a script and write ones that aren't too complex. once this last semester was over i decided to teach myself a new language or two or 12. (just not all at once ). i've kinda poked through some server-side stuff and databases, some scripting stuff other than java, and whatever else i've run across. however i haven't found many online tutorials that i could pull very much useful information from in any of the langs. mostly what i've come across are pages for people who have a basic understanding of the language and its syntax and whatnot prior to reading that page.
also, not having really focused on any one lang other java so far, that's kinda slowed the process down.

which brings me to my question.... given a general idea of the languages i already know, what direction should i start looking?

perl? c/++? MySQL? other?

additional info... i'm not now, nor have i ever been, aesthetically inclined. therefore ruling out my using PS (no fancy sigs from me)(even though if a did want to get into that, my computer is too small/slow to handle it anyways). not to say i'm not creative, but i don't have a knack for the layout/color-scheme/etc of pages/programs. i've always been a believer in "form follows function," which is a possible lead-in to my working on a double-major in computer science and mathematics.

well, i'd love to hear what ya'll think...

ooo, I'm first.
Welcome to the asylum, you'll find it's a great place, and a great resource. Try and share your knowledge with others as well as gain knowledge from them. Personally I suggest starting to get into php, it's a really good server-side language. Also don't just read tutorials, spend the cash and get books as well, they're usually better, and you can take them just about anywhere. Well I hope you have a good stay at the asylum, I'm sure some of the higher members will be along shortly to show you to your cell and get you situated.

well ,welcome around here.
(hint: don't forget to have a look at our FAQ)

hm as for new languages to learn:
-php you could probably pick up in two weeks. It's syntax is very much like java/C++.
-SQL (a language, not mySql, a software :-) ) you definatly should bother to learn, and to learn right. make sure you know what a left join does. It has a widespread use not only in advanced webprogramming, but in many buisness java programs (obviously, storing data is a common problem).
-perl. if you must. nothing that php couldn't do. and has a horrible syntax.
-javascript - don't bother. petty problems (different called things in IE/Netscape/Opera), the language itself is just another {} encapsulated thing... no worries, just hack at it, no learning required if you know a real language already. but a lot of looking up broswer-differencies. And I wouldn't want to learn those by heart. They'll be different in 3 years anyhow.

that's my .2 USD,
Tyberius Prime

hmm, just glanced over the FAQ and it looks like it might take at least an hour or two to get through the most of it, maybe a bit longer if i get distracted

Lord_Fukutoku: Welcome - interesting name (I'm sure that gets you into a lot of fights ). I think TP has covered a lot of the bases there but have a look at the GN for some good tutroials (button at the bottom of this page).

Brief story behind the name... (and yes, it has ticked a few people off )

fukutoku (pronounced: "foo - koo - toe - koo") came from a Bob and Tom skit one morning several (3-4) years back. For those unfamiliar with Bob and Tom, it's a radio show that airs across much of the US in the morning (quite hilarious I might add). While reading through and bantering on about various news headlines, they came across one entitled "Fukutoku Bank Caper." Some guy had held up the Fukutoku Bank in Japan. Well, being a public broadcast show, there are certain ways of pronouncing 'fukutoku' that are a no-no. Anyways, they went on for several minutes trying to just say it in such a way that won't get censored...

hmm, after re-reading that, it would seem that it's more along the lines of "you had to be there."

shuts up and goes to look a little deeper into the GN pages
