Preserved Topic: Win XP boot problem. (Page 1 of 1)

Here's the deal. I run Windows XP Pro on my home pc. The pc was originally designed for Windows 98; this may or may not be important. I have installed a PCI Network Card; generic brand with a Realtek chip.

When I boot my pc it will run through all the BIOS checks fine and will open windows without a glitch, but when the desktop is displayed and the boot procedure has finished the pc will hang. I can do a few things, such as: open display properties, open the start menu and my computer. I can make changes to the display properties but when I click APPLY, nothing happens, right away that is.After about 90 seconds the pc will run fine.

After some trial and error hardware checks I found out that the hang is being caused solely by the NIC. If removed the pc boots fine and will run right away, but if installed it will hang. This also happens to a freind's pc, his is a fairly new P4 system.

Does this happen to anyone else? Do you have a NIC? If you remove the NIC does it boot fine?

And just so we don't get into a XP sucks and Win200o rules debate. This does happen in Win2K Pro also.

My guess is that you have a faulty network card. I have a D-Link network card (also based on Realtek chip) and everything works fine under Windows XP (and it also worked fine under Windows 2000 and Me previously)...

My freinds NIC is a differnet model than mine and it happens on his system too.

Oh, I thought that you tested *your* NIC in your friend's PC (you didn't specify that he has a different NIC in your first post).

The first thing that now comes to my mind is motherboard. On what chipset is based your motherboard and motherboard of your friend? If both motherboards are based on VIA chipset, then you should probably install the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers and VIA Latency Patch. If your motheboards are not based on VIA chipset, you need to provide more information about both computers if you want to get better help...

could be some sort of IRQ issue as well if you have several PCI cards (sound video etc) try rearanging them.

Also make sure you are running the most current drivers for your card.

Oh and XP and 2K are pretty much the same OS with XP having a prettier GUI there's not gonna be much of an argument over which is better.

Since all PCI cards share the same IRQ under Windows 2000/XP (ACPI requirement), I doubt that changing card positions would make any difference.

But, as Bitdamaged said, you should also take a look at drivers for NIC and you should also visit Windows Update web site...
