ok here we go:
i've got a lot o' numbers like

00001

1. select the whole column and click on format cell.
2. click on "number" tab and choose custom
3. set its type to: "000"

it should work.

no it doesn't

they are already as number formatted....strange

oh i forgot: itz EXCEL 97

But they shouldn't be formatted as "Number"!

Like lallous said, select the cells, go to Format > Cells, choose the catogory "Custom" and type 000 into the field.

or type ##0 .. either one works .. it's not under the Number category but the Custom category that kuckus stated

ok o tried it again, and it works on my pc

the problem is:
when i type 00001 at home it automatically writes 1
then i do what u say and format it to 000
then it works


but at work there's no 1 in the cell there is 00001, formated as number
and if i go to custom there, it doesn't change anything

Sorry mas, that was me. I posted asking what version, and as soon as the page relaoded I realized you already answered that in your 2nd post - deleted the post right away thinking nobody would have seen it yet
