instead of browsing through all those hostlists on the net, i thought i would ask here about some personal experiences with webhosts.

not much requirements (its for a small client's site):
location: europe preferred (german-speaking support would be best!)
software: php/mysql
price: low-cost (<$5 /month)

well, I personaly use Puretec... but there php/mySql offers start at 22 EUR/month.
You might want to look up the hoster test in a recent C't... there were some cheaper ones there.

Ich benutze seit ca. 2 1/2 Jahren Puretec und hatte bisher nie Probleme mit dem Provider gehabt. Nur ist der Preis im Vergleich mit anderen Anbietern etwas zu hoch. Ausfälle gab es bei mir bisher noch nie, die Geschwindigkeit ist auch sehr hoch und Sicherheitsprobleme (siehe c't 10/2002) sind den Leuten bei Puretec auch fremd. Leider muss man für die PHP/MySql Kombination 22,99? pro Monat hinblättern.

Hosteurope hat einige preiswertere Angebote, angefangen mit dem WebPack L mit PHP/MySQL support für 7,99?. Bei Hosteurope bin ich seit Anfang dieses Jahres, hab mit dem Support noch nie Probleme gehabt, aber es gab vor wenigen Tagen kleinere Server-Ausfälle. Man wurde aber per Email informiert, dass Updates zu Apache 1.3.26 und PHP auf Version 4.2.1 durchgeführt wurden. Als Kunde muss man die Ausfälle leider in Kauf nehmen, aber meist werden die über Nacht durchgeführt, wo der größte Teil der deutschen Internet-Surfer schon am schlafen ist.

Am besten man spricht mit dem Klienten über die Preise und zieht dabei die c't dazu und macht die jeweiligen Vorteile und Nachteile klar.

Puretec is an exctellent hoster, albeight a bit expensive.

Hosteurope is ok for it's price, has ok security, but more downtimes than Puretec

I just recently discovered www.planetschool.de - they offer 50MB incl. PHP & co. (but without MySQL) for only 2,- ? / month and I believe that their other packages are pretty cheap as well. But they only take registrations from Germany AFAIK, so if you live in Austria or Switzerland you might have to email them if it's possible to sign up from there, too.

I'm using a spanish company (dynahosting) they offer a good PHP-Mysql, email and a nice control panel which I never use

They also give you a test week if you like it you take it if you sdn't, just drop it. Free.

I dunno what are your needs, but this company has work at good rate with me, I've never seen the server slow or something like that.
The prices goes from 40? every 3 month with the basic option (which includes the services named above) and you choose the server: win or lynux.

Sadly, I haven't found an english option for the site, but if you are interested, just tell me what to traslate, I'll be glad to help. And I can make the phone calls when needed!
