Whilst installing 3DMark2001SE tonight, I heard a two-toned warning siren going off somewhere in my room. Checked the TV, not that. Outside? No. Tower?...

- insert that sinking, gut wrenching feeling here -

... so when has a siren not been bad? It was being made inside the tower, so I'm assuming it's got something to do with my computer being about ready to melt on me. Anyone know what it might be, specifically? Heating problem? *shrugs* I'm at a total loss...

Thanks.

Well, like I said, it wasn't really a single note... it sounded much like an alarm going off. Which got me worried. So I gave it an hour off and it's working like it's good old self...

...but it's still worrying me like none other...

So an alarm went off while you were installing 3DMark2001SE?? Strange.

Well, the only thing that I could think of was a surge protector. When the battery goes low on them, sometimes they sound an alarm. However, you said that it was coming from "inside" your tower??!!??

I can't really think of anything that would sound an "alarm" in the tower.

Keep us up to date, I want to know what this is.

My tower makes all kinds of noises... That's how I can tell when it's working correctly

A loud, long beeeep = virus detected
A "clicking" = it's trying to load something
Two beeps like above (one quick, then one long) = I need to start closing big programs because it's low on resources
Squelling like a stuck pig = the modem is trying to connect
A slight "grinding" = it actually managed to connect to the web

And a few others that I can't think of right now...

Grumble: Yup. Though windows didn't show so much as a single error...
CPrompt: I figured it might have been my digital camera, a cheap-oh little $80 one I picked up at Target (I believe...), but it was disconnected and without batteries... everyone else I've talked to about it is confused as well. No one has apparently heard of a tower sounding off an alarm before, outside of BIOS, that is.

Alarms? Weird. My computer usually just tells me when something's wrong. Or when it's hungry. Or when it wants to watch the game on TV...

Hope this isnt too late been away for a few days

If you have hardware monitoring on ya Motherboard it could be the board warning ya that ya cpu or system temp is above norm, it uses the pc speaker attached to ya motherboard as this is hardware level not software based warning, although some newer mb's like intels p4 chipsets will trigger a windows event (ie warning window) saying shut down pc before it melts.

most beeps etc coming from inside ya case are bios warnings of some kind, most common are when ya first install new memory or cards or ya moved ya system and something got loose, just reseat the cards ie take em out and replacing em should solve it.

the siren though usually is a precursory warning to a terminal event, ie ya cooling fan stooped working on ya psu or cpu. sorry didnt see ya before..

just a quick tip for others go into bios if ya ever hear this noise and check ya rpm on fans..if zero shut down like there aint no tomorrow....open case and do a visual check the system only needs to be on a for a split second to see if the fans spinning.
