Recently a friend of mine has had several nasty emails sent from his Hotmail account. He hasn't givin out his password to anyone it it is really long, 14 characters. There is nothing is in his sent email box. Is there any way to increase the security for hotmail accounts or to prove that he didn't send the email to the person?

Is he sure they were sent from there and they didn't just have his email address as the reply to:? Something similar happened to me (I suddenyl recieved a big load of bounced spam email with my address in the reply to slot) - I sent the offendign material to the people in charge at the time and they looked at the headers and informed me if there was a problem to forward any angry mail to them and they'd confirm that I wasn't the original source.

So check the headers - its really the only way to find out what has really happened.

Hotmail security? That's a joke, right?

Anyway, the same thing has happened to me, and the result was pretty much what Emperor said. Hotmail seems to be a favorite for spammers.

Email addresses, including HOTMAIL, can be forged.

As Emperor mentioned, they can be forged to look like they came from you. An interesting example: we did MacombSheriff.com, which has recently made some high profile arrests for kiddie porn and related crimes. They have an Internet crimes unit as well.

Anyways, suddenly, we were getting bounced mail coming back to us offering pictures Russian teens involved in various acts. Well....not more than an hour later we started getting some serious complaints from users who were getting these messages. Headers revealed they didn't come from us (we knew that already). But it was embarrassing....

I think the problem is that a decent email provider would help cover your ass when people start complaining but if you are with HotMail well............

The poster has demanded we remove all his contributions, less he takes legal action.
We have done so.
Now Tyberius Prime expects him to start complaining that we removed his 'free speech' since this message will replace all of his posts, past and future.
Don't follow his example - seek real life help first.

Thanks for the help here. This should be enough to work and to try and get my friend and his friend talking again.
Just how do I see what the IP address of the email?

Turn the header option to its most advanced setting, and then open the message. You'll see a bunch of stuff at the top, including lines like:

Received: from ms1.mail2world.com (HELO mwsmtp02la.mail2world.com) (66.28.189.32)

There will probably be several of these. The one AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST is *MOST LIKELY* the originating system's information. As you go up the list, you can see how the message was passed from one system to another.
