I've started a message board recently and I'm trying to promote the best I can. I'm having trouble thinking of places I can promote though. I've told all my friends and asked them to tell all their friends, but that's not really enough. I even went into a few AOL chat rooms while at my folks house in Cape Cod when i went on vacation recently. It's going pretty well now, there are almost 500 posts and 87 topics, but I need more members. Any thoughts on where I'd be able to promote while still respecting net etiquette? I don't want to annoy anyone or step on any toes. Thanks for the help!

It can be rude if for instance your forum is merely a copy of the one you are posting the promo for it in. Trying to "steal" members so-to-speak. However, if it's done tactfully, and the people "in charge" don't really mind (or even incourage it in Emps case), then by all means, don't hide it from us

Kine: Interesting forum but it seems a little isolated - if you develop the rest of the site (how about an index page - that looks very unprofessional) then I could see more people being interested in providing links to it.

Good search engine rankings will be important and make sure Google can index your site. Esp. try and get in here:

being listed in the same directory at dmoz will help a lot and I believe there are inmates (Wangenstein?) who can help with that.

You might want to add yourself to as many webmaster resource sites as you can be bothered with - quite a few will want links back before they add you (having a link poitning back to them anyway will help your rankings). So try getting in here:

Basically search Google and start making lists of sites like this that allow you to submit links to them and then start promoting yourself. So here are your starters for 10:

Wow, thanks for the all the advice! I'll check those links out and do what you said. I really appreciate the help. As for the index site - I purchased the domain for a group I'm working with that has created their own continuity for gaming systems. I've been running a game online for almost 2 years now based on that continuity. The index page is reserved for that and that only, and it hasn't been set up yet. I suppose I could sub host a New Entertainment Technologies page and use that, or perhaps I should buy anoher domain for it. I completely agree though, I need some kind of an index page. Thanks again!

Kine: At least until you have a separate domain then a directory would be a good idea and would help you co-ordinate the affiliate/promotion thing. Add a link section and some other goodies and see where you o from there. It is a well filled niche that you are aiming at so you might want to think of an angle to make you stand out from the crowd - you mentioned gaming and there is a lot of interest about various aspects so think about playing to your knowledge and strengths.

You might also want to add yourself to the Asylum ring as that can't do any harm

Also fill in those forum descriptions as a blank space doesn't look great.

We've got a few things going on over at Eyeball-Design (banner rotation for Photoshop-related info on the forum, and a links section). I can talk with a few people there and see if we can get you in the rotation/in the links section.
