Why it sucked?

I have both installed, Win2k and WinXP, and WinXP is as stable, as good as Win2k. The difference, mainly, is that XP is way more beautiful than Win2k (and, in my case, XP has some minor but annoying bugs).
But since I installed XP, I almost never go back to 2k. BTW, I don't even know if I'm going to download and install SP3. Uhmmm, maybe

Neither of them worked well. But win2k was stable a couple of months than it began to restart whenever it wanted. Xp is worse! It reboots the computer all the time. It freezes and I just get .
I'm d/l sp2 now (sp3 not aviable for swedes) and I hope it doesn't mess things up like the last time I d/l it. Then I got an message saying "NTDLR error".

If the sp2 works now i let you now. if not ....arrrrggh...install..Xp.......again!

While I was using 2k, it almost never crashed.
The same for XP. Both are stable as hell in my good and old computer (P3-733). When some program freezes, I just have to force to close that specific program or it is closed anyway by the system, if it crashes (and I got that silly error report that I didn't disable yet).
Try looking for and installing the latest drivers for the sound and graphic card. They are the key to a stable system, I guess.

I might be mistaken, but I think you can configure that when you install windows.

As for the reboot thing (this is for XP, might be the same on 2k?)... My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced Tab. Go to the Startup and Recovery box and click Settings. There is a checkbox in there that says "Automatically Restart".

Hope that helps.

I don't know how to change the default Program folder manually but I know how to change it using Tweak UI for XP. First, download Tweak UI for XP from Microsoft's site (it's free and it should be easy to find). Then, after you have installed it, go to MyComputer/Special Folders option. It must be some registry key that the app changes. Anyway, Tweak UI can do the job. About Win2k, there must surely have a way, but I don't know.

I love this computer... It has two years of use and I plan to change it to a better one in mid 2004 (I changed my mind and I'm gonna take it to the USA because I need to save money; Brazilian money is getting weaker every day).

Olsson, I forgot to say.
Now that your Win2k is running smoothly, use another partition and install WinXP, give it a shot. If your computer can run win2k smoothly, then it will run XP as such.
You must use a different partition. You'll get a multi-boot screen at the beginning and you can configure it to be fully automatic, directing the boot to the OS you want (XP or 2k) without having to choose every time you start your computer. The installation of XP in a different partition will not mess a bit with your win2k installation.
Having 2k okay in one partition for all your important tasks, you can test XP without rush. You can get to know it well. You can test to see if you can find all the drivers you need to make XP works okay.
If you don't have a partition but you have enough HD space, make another one using Partition Magic. Even if you don't like XP, you can set this OS as a testing OS, for installing applications that you are afraid of messing with your system.
Currently, Win2k is my testing OS. XP is the main one.
Just a piece of advice.

I recently upgraded from 2k to xp, and I haven't had any problems. The one noticeable difference is that xp starts up a heck of a lot faster than 2k did. And I like that. Of course, I got rid of all the "beautiful" stuff in xp and set it up so the desktop looks like it did in 2k, but that's just personal preference.

luckily i got rid of it!
I have heard that if you have two OS they affect each other.
I don't wan't that to happen now when win2k works perfectly!

Yeah, there are a ton of compatibility issues with XP at first. Especially if you are running an upgrade. Once you get all your drivers and XP compatible hardware sorted out, runs like a dream.

XP and 2k do not affect each other in anyway when installed in the same computer (and obviously in different partitions). I have 2k in c:\ as FAT32 and XP in d:\ as NTFS. They run as if they didn't know about the existance of each other. Each OS has its own Programs folder in e:\ so e:\ has only two folders: "Programas Win2k" and "Programas WinXP" (it's Portuguese but easy to figure out ), Games and other non-serious stuff are installed in another partition (j:\).
I have even made the following test: I installed a game in Win2k, in a folder named "J:\NameOfTheGame"; then, I deleted this folder and I installed the same game in WinXP, in a folder with the same name, "J:\NameOfTheGame". The game runs perfectly in both OSs and I saved some serious HD space (1GB).
So I assure you. Unless the user does something really dumb, there is no way to have an OS affecting the other.

Well I have considered the facts and I will install xp on a diffrent 4gb hd.
Then if its messing with win2k I just rip it out and feed it to the dog
You say that xp is more beutiful does that mean that you use the default
settings (ugly mac rippoff). I switched to old win2k style at once after I had
installed but if there are d/l skins

Olsson, I really don't care about skins and the like. I think that this is a good explanation why I don't like Winamp; skins seem to be its best. Although Windows Media Player also has some skins, I use the default one.
And the same goes for Windows XP. I use the default one (not exactly _the_ default, because the default is a blue skin and I use the second default one, the green one - My Windows XP came with just these two skins - besides the old look) and I like it a lot. It's really beautiful. I don't see it as a skin but just as the default look for XP.
Since I never ever saw a Mac computer, it's indifferent for me if WinXP new look is a rippoff or not. I just like it. I'm sort of bored with the old Win95/98/SE/Me/NT/2k look. It was time for a changing.

From a technical standpoint, WinXP is the work of a lunatic. And not the good kind either .

First of all is the fact that in increasing the "user friendliness" of the OS, they've made it more difficult to tweak any settings or to do any type of low layer maintenance. Pretty does not equal functional.

Second, and most irritating of all, is the copyright system in place. You get 5 hardware changes before having to call Microsoft for a new product key.

But, that could probably be my personal dislike of XP.

Objectively, XP fights right between Win2k and WinME. It gives more access to the hardware layer ala XP, but has the stability of 2k.

~shrug~ Your call, I guess, but I wouldn't touch XP with a ten foot pole.

According to Asylum ranking, I am a lunatic. Maybe this is the reason I like XP so much.

I found XP as friendly as the older versions (95/98/ME). If you are not a power user, you won't notice the difference because the daily features are all there, at the same place or easy to find. But, if you are a power user, there is a miriad of new features to discover and learn (from the NT world) and that's indeed confusing sometimes.

Those myriad of new features from the NT world are all in ambiguous locations and finding them consisits of wading through all the user friendly features. Once you do find them, they don't always work as they're supposed to.
