is the pressure measured inside the pen or inside the tablet?

I guess the tablet is what is 'pressure sensitive' since the pen does not have a power supply of a way of transmitting any signal to the puter.

but how does the tablet know then that the pen is hovering over the tablet?
and if you use different pens how does it know which one you use?
