I think it would be totally awesome if you could set up a page for PDA users to download the posts from this forum sans the images. I would very much like to read some of these when I'm away from my computer (like when I'm in the can).

What do you think? Maybe use some sort of PHP code to parse the forum pages into straight text files or something? It's a dream maybe somebody can propose a more legitimate resolution then what I've proposed.

How to tell if you're truly addicted to the Asylum: you wish you could still visit whilst doing your daily duties.

Good suggestion

but we'd have to figure out a way to post messages from your pda as well (probably palm only... I don't exepct anyone to give me his windowsCE device to implement it ;-) )

so long,

Boudga: I know a number of us would be interested to experiment with testing serving up the content for different platforms (I'd be interested to look into aspects of this for redesigned GN). I suspect that it would be easier when we switch to PHP which looks like happening sooner rather than later.

Testing might be an issue but there are tools out there for WML testing for example. Anyone got devices we can use for testing?

Yup. Got an old Compaq iPAQ and a somewhat flawed Palm V. Just point me in the right direction and I'll test things for ya'.

I actually have surfed the Asylum using the iPAQ from a few boring meetings (we've got WLAN at work).
It all works well, but it needs an awful lot of scrolling on such a small screen..

I've got a Crackberry. er, I mean Blackberry. I can test with that.

I have a Philips Nino 300. It's an early MIPS PDA running WinCE and I would be more than happy to test with it.

Hey Drac!

Actually I never left...I've just been cruising below radar for awhile...it's nice to be welcomed back though!

My boss at my last job gave me the PDA...I don't think I would have shelled out money for it.

I have a handspring visor edge. I'd love to sync the asylum to it (i don't have a modem so I'd have to sync of course) It'd be awesome to read these boards while I'm away. This sounds so cool. I'd read it on the can too

Instead of switching the entire board to PHP, wouldn't it be easier to create a css file and set the media type for PDA's? It would seem like the easiest solution.

Well, I don't think they're talking about converting everthing to PHP. Just using PHP to parse the data.

Excellent idea. But .. two words: Doc's Bandwidth !

I've always thought it would be cool, and easily made , it could be done in VB using IEs OCX dealy (I dont know much about vb). The program would work like IE but log you in and mark ones you've posted in and you could customize all sorts of stuff and do what you suggested.

Another problem would be you could only read it.

St. Seneca: The board is going to be switched over to PHP regardless (see one of the Doc's more recent posts) I was just suggesting that waiting until then would make things easier

St. Seneca... can you provide a URL explaing how to set up CSS to make pages readable for PDAs? I haven't heard of anyone doing that...of course I also haven't been on top of programming trends lately either...
