I set up a sequence from the game as windows
start sound. So there is definitly something
for you there....

I listened to all short waves over 45min. but it
was quite funny to hear the different speeches

- Buy fire works
- Get Recording device ready. (Some tape device would be good)
- Make sure nobody (inclusive yourself) can get hurt.
- Connect if needed an microphone and put Rec.device on "rec"
- Use the fire works
- Connect the rec. device to computer (line in on the sound card)
- Digitize Sound....

this way there will be no copyright problems.

Other way's are renting some war movies, connect the sound from the VCR to the computer and start digitizing.
But this would be stealing.

Or call an sound studio nearby and ask what they can do (the best thing to do if it is more than a hobby project)

Luxo_Jr : take a sennheiser and a recording medium of your choice and go record some wild tracks.

For explosions and suchlike, set the gain slightly high (SLIGHTLY!!) so that you pick up some distortion, but not too much.

Seriously - the ONLY WAY to get sound on film in the way you want it, is to start your own recording library.

If you use 'stock' fx, or rip them from other work, you're not only doing an injustice to the film, but to the whole creative process.
Almost all of the sound you hear in film is added in post - Dialogue being the only synch track.

Take a look at any of Sergio Leone's films... his sound designeer (name is a blank) is almost unique in his creative tallent.
Also, check out any sound designed by Walter Murch - Pure genius.

Remember this:

Your image quality can SUCK - bigtime - no-one will care if the soundtrack is clean and appropriate.
Separate the diegetic from the non and 'treat' accordingly.
Blow the audience away with sound - YOUR OWN SOUND - it's the only way to succeed.

Sorry if I drifted a bit.

If thats cool man. Thanks for the insights! Im planning to try and get my stupid microphone to work at home, one of those basic ones that I have hooked up to SoundForge. Once I solve that I will get various house appliances and see how I go. It is just the plane sound that I really need to find, like the engine hum and and propellars. Other things I can find anywhere I guess. If nothing else works then I might try the airport down the road which is a parachuting club and they have a few planes. I will prolly know by next week if I need to do this or not....so anyway....back I go to class and work on the script for my second film.

Another quick example for you...

Start Wars
Imperial Tie Fighter = An Elephant
Imperial Walkers = A punch press & bicycle chains on concrete
Lightsaber = A TV set and an old 35 mm projector
Luke's landspeeder = Los Angeles Harbor Freeway through a vacuum-cleaner pipe

Have fun!
