Back when I had my own domain, I was #1 with Google for "whispies" in no time flat. Partly due to my efforts and partly due to Steve's link (which still points to the old site).

Then I moved to my ISP webspace. Bye bye #1 for "whispies".

Well, I've been keeping an eye on it for some time. I've been #1 again for some weeks. While I am happy about that, I wouldn't exactly see that as enough to make a post about.

A few minutes ago I was dinking around with Google. You know, just checking out some random things. Just for shits, I typed in "techncial slop" and came up #1! Happens to be my brush making tutorial. Oddly enough, FawWiki 29 isn't too far behind. "Tech-slop" is also at the top.

I'm at the top of Google for 3 phrases. Sure, odd phrases and two are extremely close, but I'll take it.

I can't help but wonder if meta tags and titles will give me more oomph. Anybody want to do my meta tags for me? Only around 30 pages or so...

wj: Thats good to hear and it demonstrates the power of applyng Google bombing principles. The link to your whispies piece in this FAQ:
http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/682/

just says 'whispies' and our link to your brush making tutorial has the phrase technical slop in it:
http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/29/

Now the FAQ has more search engine friendly links Google has sucked up all the information nicely and we are doing really well in some searches already (I've been keeping an eye on the stats and tweaking things and adding things were required. Most of our referrals are coming from search engines). The major victories that I've found are:

How do I completely disable Flash? - which was around #3 at Google for disable Flash.

Where can I get free sig hosting? - which comes in somewhere around #5-9 for various searches along the lines of 'free sig hosting'.

I've added notes on our position in the FAQs

Both have really shot up our Most Visited page (with the free sig hosting really streaking ahead).

As the FAQ gets more links and better rankings in various subjects so our linking to other sites gives them more relevance.

Back to your question (and enough of my gloating) - it does look like Google put a lot of weight on what the links to you say but I would recommend using TITLEs and METATAGs - although they might not be worth as much as they used to they still hold a lot of sway with some search engines and things like a title will help when you appear in a search engines results.

Do you have PHP?

Just did a check and Weadah's 'pixel painting' mini-tutorial appears at number 3 for pixel painting:
http://www.google.com/search?q=pixel+painting

and number 5 for brush making:
http://www.google.com/search?q=brush+making

I'll get bored of this eventually

[edit: This FAQ also comes in at numbers 10 and 11 in a search for the terms and phrase erotic fonts : http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/66/
I take full blame for that ]

[edit2: We're number one, we're number one:
http://www.google.com/search?q=transparent+graphic
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22transparent+graphic%22
right I must stop this and go and do somehing useful]

The FAQ is beautiful. It is a work of art. When all the nonsensical threads (not implying that all threads are nonsensical, of course) have gone the way of the dodo, the FAQ will remain as a wonderful repository of the collective knowledge of the Asylum. I think it's an example of the true power of the Internet.

Oh, and congrats, wj. It must feel good to be at the top.

Or it shows how much we enjoy finding things to do other than work.

BTW, congrats wj

Lordy WJ - that's two lapses of mine you've caught this week.

Fixed now. Let the referrals pour in!

I've known about the one lapse since I moved my slop. I just didn't feel like nagging you too much over it. I did mention it in e-mail once or twice. I just wasn't worried too much about it.

The typo lapse kinda took my by surprise. Considering how long it's been there and that I found it with Google, it is kind of funny in it's own way.

Emps, I'll do the tut rip before I start working on my titles and meta tags. I promise.

Asylum FaqWiki rocks almost as much as Google. I can't wait for the FaqWiki's search function to get beefed up.

Lunch time.

Tut on the way, Emps. Pretty soon I'll be competing with myself on two different sites for "brush making".

I'm also #1 for "picking colours". No where to be found for "picking colors". That will teach me to use spellings that I learned all those years ago. No honour it, I tell ya. Maybe I'll go to the theatre and not think about it.

I did plug-in some more Asylum related phrases and came up with some interesting things. I'm not going to give a report like Emps, though.

I told Woman about some of this Google popularity. The first thing out of her mouth was, "Cool. Now use it to make some money." This is something that I've been thinking about for some time, and I think I have found a solution that is inobtrusive and non-banner. Time will tell.

edit: No, I don't have PHP.

I'm laughing my head off at that, only because it's so true.
